I reckon JE power cleaning 155 is certainly possible. Last year, whilst picking up some weightlifting plates in Kilmarnock, I met Peter Kirkbride. Under 18 lifter, 75kg and with (if my memory serves) a 180 C&J and 145 snatch. As has already been stated, Jonathan Edwards is a freak of the highest degree, with as much explosive power as a box full of plastique - what reason, as a retired athlete does he have to lie?

Jonathan

Perfect example of how people collect information and pass it on wrongly thus blurring the truth ...

Peter Kirkbride has weighed 85kg for the last few seasons not 75kg and his best lifts up to last year would have been more like 135kg 175kg , i know this to be true because i shared many squads with him ...

Not far off the truth but slightly exagerated all the same ..

I did see Dwain Chambers Power Clean 150kg with my own eyes and many other athletes doing similar big power cleans .. Many Sports now do power cleans and other sports have amazing athletes .. I beleive if there was a British Power clean championships Many athletes could out power Olympic Weightlifters in this country .. Why not ???

Yea Jonathan think he was in the 85kg class when you seen him and doing what Mark quoted but I was speaking to him on Monday in the gym and he was saying that he snatched 150kg and c&j 180kg 2weeks ago in training with a hangover Happy , think he c&j 185kg ??? at the recent british juniors held in Kilmarnock but he weighs around 88kg now though but still strong lifting and only 20 years old. There's a good few young oly lifters at the gym I train at aswell as excellent coach's.

I'd rather do light deadlifts than GM's with a bad back! Still it's whatever you can do without hurting that counts.

I've got to agree with Iain and by going sumo you'll hit the lower back less(if it's causing the problem work around it, don't do exercises that target it unless it's very light weight) unlike the other excercises suggested and you'll still be deadlifting! Cool Grin

Strong pressing Cool , You thought of doing any S.P.A. comps as there's way more comes than the bdfpa north of the border? As you've still got back issues have you tried sumo deadlifts as there alot easier on the back? Happy

No mate, I just hammer the events for six weeks or more (if possible) before the comp. When i was training for BSM u105 last year, 320 yoke was a real struggle at the start, but I was flying with it by comp time

Only way to get better at the comp events is do them week in week out IMO

Thought that was the best way Wink . I'll just need to get more events in. Cool

Sweet deadlift mate, should have gone for the 215 as it would have been nailed! Cool

Nice session Stephen, glad to see you back to the proper fun stuff

Give SSM qualifier a bash Grin

Cheers JC, I probably will give it ago(decide nearer the time) as i'm off the weekend it's on so I'd probably go watch so may aswell take part as it's alot more fun Grin . Not much chance of a 280kg d/l by then but aslong as I think I have a chance of shifting the weights in the other events(don't need to finish them) then there's no reason not to have ago, it's all good experience Grin Wink plus maybe I could manage a little air time with 280kg Tongue Wink (I'll pass that crack pipe backGrin ).
Do you peak for a strongman comp, as in the same way you would for a powerlifting comp? If so how do you manage it? As in past comps I've done I've just turned up on the day and seen if I could do the events Confused without peaking strength wise. I burn out if I try peaking in the gym and doing events each week.

As it was a nice day just trained outside in the garden this morning.

Deadlift:
70kg x5
120kg x5
165kg x5
190kg x5
190kg x5
190kg x5

8" Log:
45kg x8
75kg x5
90kg x5
90xkg 5
Then strict pressing
70kg x7 straight to 45kg x12 struggling abit Tongue

Yoke:
60kg x10m
160kg x10m
240kg x10m
240kg x10m

As I suspected, I'm still crap at yoke Tongue . Weights not the problem
just wobble alot when on the move. Roll-Eyes

Yoke carry:
160kg x20m

280 dead with hitching, adrenaline, etc could be nailed man, but even if not, no big shakes. Martin and Garry from the unit are both doing it, and their deadlifts are 225 and 200 just now Happy Bit of ground to make up. I'm sitting it out til 2010 though Happy No sure about t-shirts, think you might have to make the final to get one of them Grin

What no t-shirt? Unhappy . It's alot of ground to make up though and don't want to get in the habit of hitching , I'll decide nearer the time Wink as I'll need to get some events training in, would be good to get some more comp experience in though. Happy Good to hear Garry is giving it ago. Grin

Keep it slow and steady to ensure the knee gets sorted for good, there's plenty of time! When I seen you at the seniors I was surprised to see you loading/spotting but it didn't seem to bother your knee even catching the failed 345kg squat. Eek

It was knocking the stella back that put me in the 90's and now the 100's in the first place Grin , probably best to cut back but with xmas and new year looming there won't be much chance of that happening Grin , I'll need to get a handle on the weight gain though or I'll be cutting to make the 100's next year Tongue . Definetly will try to get through to the unit this year Roll-Eyes .
Not sure about the qualifier Confused , confident I could nail the 115kg log(even before year end) but a 280kg deadlift would require a miracle Tongue but I like a challenge Cool plus there's the other events to consider. I'll wait and see. DO you get a T-shirt for entering? .....this could sway me! Tongue
What about you? Will Garry give it ago?

Decent sesh stephen. What's the focus now the PL comps are done? Looks like a good time for a mini log/yoke/stones challenge eh? GrinCool

Thanks Brian, I'm sure we can organise a mini challenge but your training has been looking good lately so I'll need to get some event training in beforehand Wink . Tried to organise a trip up to dumbarton yesterday but the guys all have the man flu and weren't training, Tried to have a session yesterday outside but had to abandon it due to the weather Angry .
I also thought about doing the scottish master's as a guest next month but my training partners recond I should leave it and that I should just ease off and cruise into the new year as I've done a few comps this year and my body needs a rest... suppose there right. Unhappy
