Monday 22/1

A bit of warming up on the Concept 2, then

500m sprint rows 1:57, 1:59, 1:58.

If I can just figure out a way to breathe during these I'll be a lot better off. After the third one, my hip flexors were incredibly tight. And I was knackered.

I want, instinctively, to exhale on the drive and inhale as I return the handle; but I can't inhale properly when I'm compressing myself at the bottom of the stroke. I suspect I ought to inhale on the drive and exhale on the return, but I can't seem to make myself do that. As a result, I start to run out of air quite badly in the last thirty seconds or so.

I was trying to do these "properly", that is in the manner advocated by Concept 2 themselves, but I actually seem to be able to go faster when I do them wrong. Still, I was not terribly displeased on these.

Crosstrainer for ten slow, lactic-flushing minutes, then lots and lots of lovely stretching.

Excellent work on the "my journal" link - used it today, saved me farting about, and worked perfectly. Yet another reason SBB is the s**t Happy.

Excellent squatting again Happy.

Good benching today, mate. All very solid.

Sunday 21/1

Wide Pulldowns 70x12

Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3, 100x1, 115x1, 125x1x2 (all paused), 105x8, 7+f.

Almost got that last rep. The 115 and the 125s were pretty scruffy, technically, though at least each was better than the previous.

Incline DB Press 40x8,7.

Wide Pulldowns 70x8,98x8x2.

Wide Seated Rows 105x8x2. Very easy. Latwork will get heavier next cycle.

10 minutes on the elliptical, stretching.

Quick work on the log thing Happy. I actually meant to have it up at the top, alongside "edit your profile" etc, but what you've done is also cool Happy.

Another little thing - on most forums, including MT, the little icon above the post (here, the yellowish "page" picture) is a link to that particular post. That'd be handy too.

I'm almost completely certain that you're not. Although of course I may well be wrong!

You certainly were. Pumptastic.

That's exactly my reasoning, Olly Happy.

Wasn't expecting that much today - still had massive leg DOMS from unaccustomed squat volume on Wednesday, and had a very busy day.

Friday 19/1

Deadlifts 60x8, 100x3, 140x1, 160x2x5.

Never done this much before, I'm pretty sure, but it was too easy to call a PB. The observant may recognise this routine already, based on my target of 200kg Happy.

Platform deads 60x2, 100x2, 140x2, 160x1, 165x1 PB.

Never done these before so it was always going to be a PB of a sort, but I wasn't going to count it unless it was the far side of 350lbs. Rob egged me on to do the last one, and I was glad he did - it went pretty easily.

Platform was two stacked 25kg plates. The hardest thing about these was getting a breath in while set up to pull.

Narrow-grip pulldowns 70x8, 91x10x2. VERY easy.

Assisted chins -15x3x3

10 minutes elliptical, 20 stretching.

I feel victorious. Very happy indeed.

Deadlifting tomorrow Happy.

I have high hopes that, by starting light and doing tons'o'fives, I may actually learn to squat properly this time. That would be splendid. Then when I get back to some "heavy" singles, I will suck less.
» The Assassin (Go to post)18-01-2007 @ 18:59
That's the plan - 5x5 going up 5kg a week for a while and then maybe to 2.5kg increments, and digging deep at the bottom of every rep.

Today I have delicious doms in the quads, glutes, and erectors. Yay Happy.

Excellent stuff, Paul!

With your deadlift, it was a fair bet that there had to be more in the bench and (especially) squat once you knew what you were doing. That squat looked like nothing.
» What books have you read recently? (Go to post)17-01-2007 @ 22:42
Yeah, I do read a LOT. And rather fast. A lot of my reading is rereading, though.

Only the Borovik I was proofing is academic out of those. All the rest is fiction. The only one of the rest that's, I suppose, "hard" is probably the Wolfe I'm reading at the moment - Gene Wolfe is a real writer's writer, loads of layers and ambiguities. I love his stuff, even when I don't quite understand it, and I haven't read this one before - so I'm a happy man atm.

A lot of the others have a fair amount of depth, and are full of ideas, but they're all very readable. Especially, of course, the graphics (or "big comics", as you might want to call them Happy).
» Post Your Routine (Go to post)17-01-2007 @ 22:33
Being serious this time, the current plan is:

Sunday
Bench
Incline DB bench.
Wide-grip pulldown.
Wide-grip seated row.
Possibly some gunz.

Monday
500m interval rows.

Wednesday
Squat.
Seated overhead DB press.
Narrow-grip seated row.
Chin.

Friday
Deadlift.
Narrow-grip pulldown.
Chin.
Probably some sort of bodybuilder crap, eg laterals.

I actually bought two new balls full of white goodness from Cotswold Sunday week ago.
