Do you wanna post me my straps back, or leave 'em with somebody off the board, or what?
» The Assassin (Go to post)27-07-2007 @ 22:59
Actually I had 'em off for the first warmup set.

I shall seek Alan's counsel (he'd gone by then).

BTW: Sugden, 2pm, Sunday, if anyone fancies it.

Didn't swim on Thursday as I woke up with an unusual-for-me pounding headache, and by the time it'd gone it was far too late.

Friday 27th July, am, Moss Side

Swimming 60 lengths.

The pool was incredibly busy - apparently Friday is the day that doctor's referrals come in and "swim" about with floats on, relegating the people who can swim to doing laps in two lanes at the side. Apart, of course, from the one bloke who just hung about in the middle of that section getting in the way. Note to self: come a bit earlier on Fridays.

Despite all this crap, the 60 lengths were not much over an hour - if at all. I forgot to check the exact time at the start or end, but it was definitely under 65 minutes. Perhaps being annoyed makes me faster. Happy enough, anyway.

Friday 27th July, pm, Adlington

Squat 70x5x2, 100x5, 115x5, (belt on) 135x2, 145x2x3.

Got some good advice here, and was reassured that I'm making depth. Alan tells me I'll have 180 soon Happy. Incidentally, the routine I'm on runs right up to the moment he tells me to do something else, and not a moment longer.

Deadlift 60x5x2, 100x3, 140x2, 160x3x3.

All those present agreed that a heel was a good thing when deadlifting, so I experimented with doing them in my oly shoes. Joe told me to get my toes at 45 degrees. Felt pretty good, though I'm not keeping my arse down long enough. It will come.

Lots of quality chatting afterwards with Pete, Little A and Wiggers.

I dunno, first he can't get your suit off and now he's dropping 400lbs on you. He must have thought you were Clive Henry!

Seriously, mate, hope you're all right. If with your ridiculous grip strength you can't make a fist, that's really not good.

Not good at all Unhappy. Of course he's not the first promising strongman to have an early heart attack either - but 27 is so young. And a kid seven weeks old, too. f**k.

Tokar - yeah, I guess. I was a very strong swimmer, and a lot of that's clearly still with me although my technique's gone to s**t. I was never much of a sprint swimmer, though! The people who can actually swim are outpacing me two to one or more on crawl and not far off even on eg breaststroke.

Tony - yup, Adlington will be my three-times-weekly home from here on. Probably do one session at a weekend at either moss side or suggers.

Wednesday 25th July (am), Moss Side

Swimming 50 lengths, roughly 55 minutes.

Still just sculling along slowly and gently. I want to get to 64 lengths (one mile) and then gradually start to push the pace up. I need to be doing them in under an hour by the time term starts.

Wednesday 25th July (pm), Adlington

Coan bench, week 6, and the first session of my new life at Adders.

Bench 20x8, 70x5, 90x3, 105x2, 115x5x2 (first reps paused). My crap first rep disease is striking again.

Close-grip Bench 105x5x2.

Incline Bench 120#x5, 215#x5x2. Plates on this bench are in lbs. Fortunately I can do sums.

Chest-supported row 3 big plates x10x2. (two of them at 19kg, the third is unidentified)

Narrow pulldowns stuff plus 1 big plate x10x2. (there's a lot of shrapnel on the pulley, then several big keyhole plates. Used the shrapnel plus one.)

Lots of bo***cks talked with various gentlemen, and some other people too Happy. Home, incredibly early by training-at-Sugden standards, happy.

It's just not as much fun as man vs iron Happy.

I have to wait for a delivery tomorrow - if you're getting to adders around 6:30, and the delivery is late in the day, I'll lift with you. Otherwise I'll probably be in earlier.

Saturday... probably not. I'm squatting Friday, so if I bench Saturday it'll make me cry. I'll probably do my upper body assistance on Sunday this week. May come out with you, may experiment with moss side and save myself a fiver on petrol...

Well, they've bought no new equipment since then (apart from the robbing lockers), so I feel no guilt Grin.

DE = Dynamic Effort (as opposed to max E, or repetition E). Fast as you can, light weight, not too many reps per set (doubles or triples), often lots of sets on short rest. Traditional westside has one ME and one DE workout for each of upper and lower body in a week.

Tuesday 24th July, Moss Side, am

Swimming 45 lengths.

Took it nice and slow and easy today, my legs were tired from squatting. 50 minutes for the 45 lengths, which is not great but not bad either.

I note that Moss Side has a not-widely-publicised free weight room quite reminiscent of the old Sugden one, that a Sugden free weight induction negates any need for another one, and that it's only £2.80/session. Now that my Sugden membership has expired I think I may well be training here on occasions I'm not at adlington.
