Wayne_Cowdrey said:I really don't get that. For me no other system of payment is better. Very recently I've seen a few examples of failed electronic payment methods. I was in Gregg's on Friday and they were only taking cash because of a systems failure, which was fine with me.

I haven't seen an electronic payment failure in years. Cash has to be fetched and replenished; it generates change, which is an even bigger nuisance. It's a pain. I have given up on a couple of takeaways that don't take cards; I understand the urge to fiddle the books, but it's simply too much trouble.

And it's really no trouble for the shop. I am on the board of my local table tennis club, and we recently got a card machine. It wasn't expensive, the charge is comparable to what it costs us to bank the cash we take, and it saves a huge amount of pissing about with change and floats. We all look forward to the day when all the players just present a card or a phone.

Meanwhile,

We was a great friend to lifting in the NW and the British team, to Adlington, and to me. One of those rare men who can lift any situation, always the most positive man in the room. No justice.

I don't want to do anything with cash, honestly. It's a pain in the arse.

Went for the least obvious word of the three available, foolishly.

I doubt "can we spam you with promotions on a daily basis" would get as many takers.
Yesterday I was in Manchester and used an NCP car park you can't pay for until later when you must go online, type in your reg plate that's been recorded via APNR and pay via card/paypal. I suspect this is a lovely little earner for NCP with people who forget or aren't IT savvy and receive a much larger non-payment fine through the post.

It may be, though for people who frequently use NCP (such as myself), the camera car parks are excellent. One can, once registered with them, set it up to be automatic; so, when I was in Manchester yesterday, I drove into the car park when I arrived and out when I left without further thought. Within a few seconds of leaving, I got a phone notification that payment had been taken, and to contact them if I thought it incorrect. Very convenient indeed.

I have always liked you Rick and even more so now. An irrational dislike for certain answers is speaking my language. I cannot, nor will I ever, let go of my fury at Wordle for using ‘email’ as a word of the day.

Flattered. I too have always suspected we would get along.

I do remember being slightly (and, in context, unreasonably) annoyed by a US spelling, and raising an eyebrow at "Agora" in the days when the original site and the NYT were running on very slightly different word lists.

The third guess left me in considerable puzzlement, because now I knew the first four letters and that the fifth wasn't what it seemingly had to be. I am not a fan of the answer, for no especially rational reason.

If it had been wrong I would have been completely confounded. Happily, it wasn't.

(Having since been and looked it up on a solver app, in fact it was the only possible word at this point, due to my slightly peculiar choice of third.)

I may use "mouse" as my opening Wordle word at some point.

"mouse" and "train" could be very good, actually, though it now occurs to me that "house" and "train" is probably even better - the ten most common letters in English iirc.

Spent most of the morning constructing a CV, for a grant application I'm involved in with my old PhD supervisor. I haven't needed a CV since 2004 (I've been in post since then). I didn't have my old one. It took me a long time to reconstruct the various job titles and publications I had as a journeyman academic, not to mention the various prizes and scholarships. Quite a warm fuzzy feeling putting it all together, though.

An extremely fortunate third word made this pretty easy, under two minutes in total. Very fortunate.

Helped kill a little time while I'm waiting for an alleged "Teams" meeting with my (new) alleged property management company, which is now 13 minutes overdue. And to think I'd harboured hopes they'd be less useless than the last lot.

Now I know all five letters.
There is an obvious anagram which I know to be wrong.
Ten minutes pass as I get more and more tempted to use an anagram dictionary, before suddenly

If your fifth guess was what I believe it was (a word I’m only aware of through a weird conversation with someone with an interest in that area) then I admit my brow would have furrowed. However, I’d accept the validity, whilst simultaneously cursing, unlike the inclusion of ‘email’ which I give no s**ts if it is valid or not, as I found that an affront. 😂

Now that it's a dead letter, I shall tell you that it was pisco. Which would have made many here rather sour... Wink.
