I don't think they mean (or at least it's not the way it's applied) your ftp. They seem to use average for the race. Obviously with the races around an hour this may approximate to your ftp.

Sorry Steve but that's not correct. Everywhere the race info is listed: zwifts website, the zwiftpower results, their Facebook page, it clearly says FTP.

Using FTP is the only logical thing to do anyway otherwise too many people would be guessing.

Just looked at the results of the Iron Goat race and unless I'm missing something they're an absolute joke.

The cat 'B' winner averaged 4.1w/kg for 1hr55 minutes. The category is for riders with an ftp of less than 4w/kg....

None of the top 6 should've been in the category. No wonder so many didn't bother finishing.

Although 299W for the hour isn't too shabby!

I'll take that.

Well that was a waste of time. For some reason my kickr doesn't like the races. The resistance didn't change at all so I was essentially just riding on the flat but my speed was changing based on the gradient.

Decided to get a hardish hour in and then get off.

I'm in, let's do this!

I'm tempted. I might just be a bit too tired, but we'll see.

Are you doing the iron goat tonight Boar?

Did I ever tell you fellas that Skipper goes out with a friend of the Mrs? I had a beer with him earlier in the year without realising who he was.

I guess 11th is alright for a first attempt.

One thing I don't get - my average w/kg was the 2nd highest but I finished way down. Given that I didnt spend that much time on the front, I don't get why.

There were also loads of times when I was on the wheel and it was telling me to catch up. I couldn't work out why!

What am I missing?

That was one of the most ridiculous 45 minutes I've spent on a bike.

Trying to work out what the hell was going on in the race, while blowing out my arse before realising that my turbo wasn't working properly.

It was like it was stuck in erg mode. Changing gear doing virtually nothing. I was going up the climbs in a huge gear.

I still don't quite know what happened in the race although it's telling me my ftp is now 330. Not sure I believe that.

The Mrs is away this weekend so if I can get home and stay awake I might do the 7pm race tonight.

My Friday nights have changed somewhat.

There are some pretty cheap (relatively) options on the market Now. And I'd expect some price cuts in the next 6 months. I wouldn't rush Boar. You'll be doing most of your training on the kickr over winter anyway.

That's not entirely accurate.

I can't do crosswords.
» The Cycling Thread (Go to post)06-10-2016 @ 19:05
I would pay no attention at all to that. I think it had me at about 210 going up the mortirolo when I was going delirious and could barely see.

I could sit up and do a crossword at 210 watts.

Don't get me wrong, I realise that you've got a lot of different training needs to balance. And I'm in no way advocating lots of threshold work. I think lots of people do far too much threshold work in an attempt to increase ftp.

I think high intensity cycled with tempo/recovery work is a much better way of making long term progress without driving yourself into the ground. When you need to push the running you alter the balance cycling so it's more recovery and tempo than high intensity, and vice versa when focusing on the bike.

That's how I'd train anyway:
