Joni, you just lament speed work cos you're so f**king slow!

Plus, speed and fitness work is really the way forward guys. Speaking to both Jamie Barr and Big Al has led me to the conclusion that you should spend nearly all your time working with weights that are not max effort. This means you will go into comps with more fitness, less injuries and a better capacity to finish gruelling 5-6event comps. You guys are all much stronger than me statically, but in the First timers comp I placed pretty well and it is entirely down to practice and fitness.

I do not dispute the idea of going heavy regularly. I just dispute this constant obsession with getting pbs every session. Seriously, as powerlifters did you ever do that?

Joni, looking at your stone lifting for instance - you can nail a 140stone to a good platform (very impressive) but in a recent log entry you could only manage 3x105. Fraserburgh has stones of 110, 120, 130. Heavy singles at 140 will not make you any stronger on endurance runs.

Olly, your log is a serious weak point for you (though I have no doubt that it will come up in due time). Each week though you go for a pb. Why? I shouldn't need to tell you this but it's just going to f**k you in the long term.

You need to be patient guys. You cannot just take up strongman and then in a few months expect that you can compete with the best. You all have strengths that are up there with the best in Britain at the moment (Jonny, with your holds with the 130's for instance). The thing is that you all have chronic weaknesses that you need to work on, instead of focusing on your strengths (farmers and stones).

The main training focus for you lot at the moment should be building speed and endurance on things like yoke (comp weights start at well over 300 in national comps dudes), take farmers for more than 40m. Do multiple sets of speed runs. Take the stone and get it to high chest 6-8 times. Learn to shoulder it (it makes chesting the stone seem like a doddle). Get on a bike and cycle for intervals of 10minutes.

I give you one parting tidbit of info. Last time that I saw Big Al training stones he was working with stones from 100-130 in series. Now he can shoulder the 150kg stone so this is light for him. Not only was he loading all of these in sucession, he was running to the other side of the hall at Markinch and back again between each rep.

Food for thought folks Grin

Thanks Olly Happy

Given your physiology, pulling off the floor should be your strength. You have the big legs that you need to explode off the floor - put them to good use man!

I have noticed platform deads from time to time in your log - have you any plans to do them again?

Exactly Joni - 12.5kg is a fair chunk!

Bear in mind that there are two deadlift tyre events in Fraserburgh (farmers walks but with multiple pickups, and the van hold) so I think you need prioritise deads just for that reason. I'll still beat you to 250kg though! Tongue

Thanks guys!

Rob - for me a deadlift is about getting the weight from A to B. I shouldn't have dipped my knees under (hard to stop yourself doing that sometimes!) but as far as I can see it wasn't hitched Grin

A tough rep, not great form but still a 5kg pb Grin

Sounds pretty good on the whole - nice and heavy. I do think that you need to have some events that are based on the quickest time though, with that being the prevailing type of competition at the moment. I am all in favour of balls to the wall heavy, but you have to have some events that favour the quick guys!

Haha! I know. In my defense, I weight just over 120kg, and my arms are very long, and blah blah blah..... Tongue

I prefer rows, if I'm honest Grin

For me I gain about 20kg from mid shin, just below the knee I lose about 10-20kg. Just above the knee I gain about 30kg and mid thigh I gain 165kg Grin

Jo - good luck to Adam on the application. If you move to Derby and want to stay central move to Chester Green or to the West End (around Kedleston Road). Chester Green has a green, as the name suggests, and the West End has almost immediate access to Darley Park which is lovely Grin

Hey Jo Grin

What took you to Derby??

Good training by the way - 5x5 on chins is a goal of mine too! Roll-Eyes

I look forward to beating you in the comp Joni! It will be tight in some respects, but you will still lose! Wink

Chalk me up for Fraserburghs ya b**ches! Wink

Haha! You f**kers!

What I mean is that there are super super strong guys entering that comp (not weak ass gits like us) and there are also a lot of them. I like most of the events, but it just doesn't grab me like the shetland one does.

I am not going to compete in the Fraserburgh comp, but I will compete in the Shetlands (Northern Isles) strongest man on 5th August. The Fraserburgh comp is just a bit too soon for me and I think that the standard will be very high. Plus there is a lot of interest in it an I don't want to take the place of someone who is better suited to it.
