It's all I'm doing at the moment, the UT1 is r22, UT2 r20. I find them tough, I would naturally be around r26-28 on UT1 and going a few seconds faster /500m with the same HR.

That was a revelation to me today. I played around with the rate from 16 to 24 and reducing the rate whilst maintaining pace increases heartrate noticeably.

Samthepigman said:In regards to injuries, I visit a sports massage guy every 2 weeks without fail and have done for probably 2 years now. I can't stress how much it helps my body.

I'm in two minds about it. I did see a very good osteo a lot over the past two years, but of late any adjustment of my back just seems to cause a flare up. I try to leave it alone now, but there is certainly a lot of value in going if it helps you. It did help me for quite a while.

JT - I thought you'd appreciate that. I didn't enjoy it too much though. I think on those lighter sessions I need to avoid rate limiting myself. It's more comfortable (and I seem to hold a lower HR) if I am at 25-27 SPM.

Slower recovery row today, which wasn't at all challenging but in trying to work on my technique and using my back more, I've tweaked my back a bit Roll-Eyes Grin

Ah well, I'll stick to my normal technique next time.

When I lose motivation in strongman, I just mix up my training. I don't think it's a good recipe just to do the same thing all the time, personally anyway. Or I lower the volume for a few weeks until it doesn't seem like a chore. Maybe go do a big long walk a couple times a week until the fire comes back or get a bike or go swimming

Injuries and tweaks are the hardest thing for me to deal with, I'd say. And I get them a lot.

I used to be really goal orientated with my training, but now I think the opposite is true (and healthier). Better to just enjoy it than putting the pressure on myself to achieve certain targets.

Thanks for the input though Grin Apologies for all the rowing of late, but I'm still weightlifting a bit! Grin

For me it took a max effort 30 min where it touched 175 towards the end. Before that I'd not seen it over 165 on the rower, and that included a few max 5k's and some very tough intervals, I think my HR is a little strange though!

I think we're all pretty individual physiologically. My HR seems to go quite high, quite quickly, but then hold at 160-175 without it really getting much more strenuous. I reckon that it implies that I'm not anywhere near as fit as my numbers would imply. I remember when I was 18-21 being at a level of fitness that I'll never see again and very little getting me out of breath.

When I was in Nepal when I was 18, on the final day of a 5 day Himalyan trek, I offered to run ahead to the lunch stop (with my 20kg backpack) so I could order food for it to be ready when the rest of the party arrived. I ran for over an hour, up and down huge climbs, arrived over an hour before the rest of them got there and thought nothing of it. I was only 77kg bw then, mind.

It's remarkable what the body is capable of in our youth!

Does your present plan allow for any rate limited rows? I find them surprisingly challenging, I must admit.

The 1.5hr bike ride probably took just a bit out of you for the rowing, I suspect.

Either way, nice pace on the UT1. I'm starting to get my head around the heartrate based training, and I guess I need to find out what my max HR is in order to do that. Did you do any specific test to determine it or did you work off the basis of 220 minus age? I suspect mine is a bit higher than that, and my wife's is too. She did 2x15 min yesterday too, sprinted a bit at the end of the first set and saw 180. She's 41.

Thanks Paul. I like that sort of pace Grin

On the rower again today. I had intended to do another 30r20, but set off a bit fast so broke it into two repetitions of 15 minutes.

The second set was starting to get fairly challenging at the end. Fairly consistent 19 rate throughout, but towards the end it was beginning to grind. Sweating is the biggest issue. I'm sat in the gym (at 8c) in shorts, no top, fan going (on lowest setting, but it's a 24" fan) and sweat bands on my wrists. The sweat in my eyes and my hands getting slippery are the biggest issues. I think I need to set up the rower in a deep freeze!

Many thanks. Honestly, it's where I'm most comfortable. Doing short sprint stuff is OK, but I find I have far fewer voices in my head telling me to put the handle down on a row like that than when I do sprint stuff.

1.6c - getting into the proper ice water territory now Grin

I used to fill the bath with cold water and ice almost 15 years ago, but I'm well out of practice now. Do you have any local swimming spots you can utilise for dipping/swimming?

Merry Christmas everyone Grin

I've been struggling a bit the last few days with the right side of my lower back. It's an injury dating back to my strongman days, which started in 2007 and has plagued me since. It's mostly been absent this year with training, but it flares up now and again. It's a constant low to mid-level ache originating from my sacrum, running over the top of the right side of my hip, and then I down my quadricep. It hinders my ability to sleep a bit, but it's still not bad considering the historical context.

So I'm avoiding high-intensity rowing for a bit as I feel it aggravates it somewhat.

Had my first go at a 30r20 today, and enjoyed it. It's an intensity level that I enjoy, and I seem to be able to push on quite hard with. It's my first long row with a HR monitor too (Polar H9). It peaked at 178bpm, and that didn't feel too bad at all, so I suspect my maximum HR is considerably higher than the generic rule of thumb (which would be 184). That wouldn't surprise me at all though given that I spend so much of my teenage years doing high intensity cycling.

Anyway....

C2:

30:00 - 8252m. A by default pb, and only 219m behind my normal 30 minute pb.

Haha JT - his Italian wife did the leg work on that one.

Boar - probably not. I just don't enjoy the competitive aspect of it any more. The rower is a uniquely awful proposition for balls-out effort as the only thing preventing you from stopping is your mind. At least when you're on a bike or if you're running, you've got somewhere that you have to reach, surroundings to distract you. I love and hate the rower. I love that it doesn't really aggravate any of my injuries and that I obviously have the build for it. I hate it because it's obviously not fun - it's just pain.

Having a bit of a motivational slump at the moment. Backs (right side, plus right leg) has been a bit achy, which I've not had for a while.

Also training solo as my brother has just had a baby. Not enjoying it at all.

I did a bit of rowing today, including lots of aborted attempts at a fast 813m for this CTC thing. It's not that I can't do it, it's just I can't be arsed. Battering along at 1:25/1:30 is as much fun as sitting on a spike, and I'm just not in the right mindset to be doing it at the moment. The only way I can pull pbs is if I don't plan for them. They are best just done by accident.

I'll throttle back on the rowing and just get some meters in. PB attempts just stress me out.
