OK it has been ages but I been away and resting my injured self and just generally letting my body rest for a bit after the onslaught pre-comp for the last 2 months.

Since my last post I have loaded the 80k stone onto a 44inch platform and got a front squat PB:

Then last week I did 2 sessions with light weights and high(ish) reps. Later in the week I went out for my first short run in a long time and twisted my weak ankles within 10minutes which wasnt so great. Swimming and some minimal running are going to be resumed over the next few months but powerlifting will remain my main focus.

Monday 24th Sept

Real training resumes now. First real session in 2 weeks. Although injuries are a bit sore it felt pretty good in training. Was awesome seeing my training partner again. Am very weak

Bench - very poor
3x40k
3x50k
3,3,3,3,3x55k terribly weak and shaky

Squats - surprisingly strong
3x50k
3x60k
3x70k
3,3,3,3,3,3x80k

Dips
10xBW easy
5x(+15kg) awfully hard; same for second set at same weight

Decline dumbel press 20x12.5k (each hand)

Gentle cycle 25min
50 situps

Sunday Strongwoman at Unit 20

Yesterday had a nice chilled out day - went into Edi in the morning and then in the afternoon just sat in the sun (and got burnt). Ate lots = excellent recovery from Friday. Still felt a wee bit tired going into the workout but soon got going...

Stone (80k)
Closest yet. On first attempt I was so close. I just couldnt quite get if over the edge of the pallet. Still was really chuffed with the attempt. After that had several more tries but the explosive power was gone.

Log press max-out
30k
41k
46k
48.5k PB nice easy jerk Grin

Thick-bar overhead press
30k
40k
45k
47.5k
50k
52.5k PB failed on first attempt as I misfired it but second attempt was really easy
55k failed on 2 separate attempts

Farmers
10m x 60k each hand
10m x 80k 1 drop PB the pickup was medium-difficulty and the walking felt good - just lost stability a bit at the end...
20m x 60k with turn - like a walk in the park

Yoke
10m x 130k
10m x 190k 3 drops PB really chuffed with this. If only I could stop the bar slipping down I could maybe have managed the 10m with that. The pickup feels really really easy whereas only 6 weeks ago 190k pickup was flipping hard.
1m x 200k PB pickup was pretty good but need to work on keeping the bar from sliding down shoulders and on being more stable and walking better - that applies for both 190k and 200k

Log for reps
3 x 43.5k in 75s - weak!!! but i think thats a rep PB - was not great but then what can one expect at the end of a session ???

One-arm thick dumbel press
Worked it up from 10k to 20k for 5 reps on each arm. Really fun. First time I have ever tried it but was good.

from my personal experience i would say what you say is true Bryn. Until this year I had a "medium-term goal" of competing in PLing "one day" but with no set objective and no great idea what I was doing. I train in a gym where there isnt a single other PLer or Oly lifter etc. As a result I have been floating around and actually got really demotivated and depressed in Feb this year and gave up weights for a few months. Then mid/end March Joni pushed me firmly in the direction of the NW open and with an objective and focus in my training it was like a new start. Same goes for the Manc and Districts that I missed and then British Uneq. With competitions to train towards I always feel slighlty on the edge and my progress is going forwards in leaps and bounds. With increased contact via internet with other PLers and strength athletes, my training is more focused and specific and I am motivated. There is a degree of absence of competition but thats probably a general phenomenon experienced by female Plers etc LOL

oh yeah forgot to mention i have made up my mind to compete in the NW Open in dec just for the experience and to have something to train for. Also how better than to have a pre-Xmas competition among the friendly crowd in NW division and SBers Happy

Friday

ok i have rested since Monday - after last weekend I have been absolutely exhausted anyway and I wanted to save up to max out (again) today seeing as my comp lifts were too easy! WOW did I succeed. I would like to point out at this stage that this is probably a very unwise way of training - I should have backed off and gone light this week but I now have two weeks off anyway so I thought this wouldnt do too much harm....

Travelled up to Edi today to be inspired by Scottish strongmen and Unit 20

Unit 20 session

Squats
4x20k
4x50k
1x70k
1x80k
1x90k
1x95k PB
1x100k PB according to the on-lookers it was *just* parallel - so need to work on depth. But it was not a difficult rep by any means so I suspect that extra depth would have been fine...

Bench press (touch-and-go)
4x20k
2x40k
4x50k
1x57.5k
1x62.5k PB nice PB but probably not anymore there for now.

Deadlifts
2x60k
1x100k
1x115k
1x130k
1x140k PB pretty easy -more there still

Bench press for reps
3x8x50k on the last set i went much wider than i usually do - need to start doing this more often to get used to wider grip.

Awesome session - new total is 302,5k how beautiful is that thats a 15k increase since last Sunday and 17.5k on my competition total

I am not fussed about setting records now that that particular goal has been achieve. I may consider the Dec comp for a bit of "fun"...
» The return of the Bat (Go to post)05-09-2007 @ 09:55
by December you mean the equipped NW comp? I don't think so as I am unequipped lifter though I believe that unequipped lifters can feature as guests at equipped comps?

I am resting until Friday now as post-comp slump hit me at last! Next week and the week after I will barely get any training in as I am away at parents and then on a residential advanced "First responders First Aid" course.

Well done on the PBs Hayden, shame about the squats but it's all a learning experience eh? Just think of nationals next year Grin

hmm thats nice of you to say Roll-Eyes I mean I am pretty chuffed at the numbers but more because they are starting to look semi-decent than anything else lol

Yesterday at Dumfries I played with the viking and managed 58k which was pretty awesome and *really* easy

OK been having a wee think and here are my lessons learnt among many on saturday:
* dont watch the other competitors
* mentally rehearse all the lifts but only think about the current lift, not about lifts past or future other than the one to come directly.
* in long interludes between lifts think and talk about stuff other than the competition
* make opener lifts a banker - especially on squats or if you want to set records - you need a total and you need a confidence booster for yourself and for the judges to see you have solid form
* fill-in all the paper slips for the lifts before the competition begins so that your support or your coach only has to enter the lift and submit the piece of paper
* training total is very different from competition total
* my bench form is stil as shaky as it comes
* PL is a long-lived sport - dont overtrain and ruin yourself young.
* there are always people stronger than you (but I already knew that )
* cover the thighs during DL warmups
* have something warm to keep muscles warm between lifts

OK so now one has to wonder about what is to come... not sure in all honesty. There is a vague possibility of another competition in October but if not then we are looking at a winter of serious monsterdom - maintain myself in the 67.5k weight class but goals for Xmas 100k squat (or 110k if very ambitious), BW (65k) bench press, 150k DL...

I also have a lot of strongwoman goals

*but* and this is the difficult part - I have been warned very seriously against over-training and this is a difficult concept for me because I have reduced my exercise so much already this summer I need to train so that I can lift weights for years to come sustainably and with healthy happy joints, tendons etc. And also with both PL and Strongwoman objectives - might be some tough decisions to be made...

Monday 3rd Sept

OK so this "no over-training" thing didnt work today - I am going to rest for the rest of this week (sort of) have a heavy session in unit 20 this weekend and then will take a week of gentle swimming and nothing else whilst at parents, a heavy weekend and then another week off at a first aid course.

Squats
2x60k
2,2,2,2,2,2x80k nice and deep, nice and comfy

Bench press
2x40k
2x50k
2,2,2,2,2,2x55k

Dips
8xBW
8x (+15k)
8x (+15k)

Overhead press
2x30k
2x40k
2,2,2x45k

60 situps

Hmmm still very thoughtful and lacking in purpose with my training - everything has been about my comp last Saturday.... feels a bit weird without...

I have been running around in a panic all day today because I have gone about claming my records wrong. It was only by chance I realised that one has to fill a form in and have the judges sign it. But even less did I realise until Jordana told me today, that there is a 48h deadline on it an I didnt have the address of the records registrar which i have got hold of just now. All seems ridiculously strict and complicated Confused I hope my records will still be accepted despite being 24h-48h late...

Thank you all for your excessively generous compliments. British records aren't that great if you dont have previous records to beat !!!! The most important thing is that I had a very educational day with regards competitions and also talked about training with Jim and Bryn. And even more importantly I enjoyed myself a lot. I did myself proud - I met my expectations though not in the ways I was expecting. My comp predictions were quite different from my comp lifts.

Anyway I will analyse it all on my train trip home tomorrow and will subsequently post my lessons-learnt and training ideas...
