» Scottish Powerlifting (GBPF) - Seniors Championships (Equipped) (Go to post)01-09-2013 @ 23:48
The Scottish Seniors Championships is our next competition and will be held in Mastrick, Aberdeen on 26th October (Saturday). This is our top competition of the year, and the top powerlifters in Scotland will do battle for the prestigious best lifter trophies. It is an equipped competition, though lifters may compete unequipped if they wish. The competition is by invitation only, and around 40 lifters have made the required Qualifying Standard. Invitations are now prepared and will be sent out very soon. If you think you have made the standard but don't received an invite in the next few days, then just get in touch.
» Scottish Powerlifting Unequipped Champs, 11th Aug, Palace of Arts, Glasgow (Go to post)01-09-2013 @ 23:45
Well what a busy and excellent competition the Scottish Unequipped Champs was. A very big turnout of lifters and spectators gave a great day's lifting with some really excellent performances. It was great to see nine women lifters, with all of them making really good gains. Jo Kane got the best lifter award setting all four Scottish Open records on the way. Apple Doepner, Louise Ferguson and Rhian Arnott also all set new Scottish Records. Brilliant.

Records were also falling in the mens classes - with Stuart Jamieson and Robert Ferguson in the 59kg class setting Open and U18 records respectively. The best lifter came from the 74kg class, with Michael Ferguson (that's the third Ferguson!!) scoring 398 wilks points, setting Scottish Open records in Squat, Deadlift and Total and attempting British U23 Records but which proved just a little too much. The 83kg class was a monster category with 11 lifters, top of the pile was Glynn McAffer who looked very strong and it will be great to see more from him lifting. Seven lifters in the 93kg class, which was won by Edward Kimmons, and the biggest total of the day went to Brian Currie who won the 105kg class.

A very very big thank you to the tireless loaders - Stuart Crichton, Gary McConnachie, Gary Porter and Willie Lincoln, without their excellent work we wouldn't have had a competition. Also, we mustn't forget all the officials and organisers who put in the hours to make these competitions happen.

Started with normal deadlift slippers - but found they would be a bit slippy on some surfaces. I even had a pair re-soled with climbing boot rubber, but still not great. Briefly switched to addidas boxing boots - no better (in fact a bit worse for me).

Searched extensively for something flat with good grip and found Onituska Tiger Tai Chi - and I've been using same pair for 5 years now training and comps. Very solid grip and flat.

Entry form and full details available on http://www.scottishpowerlifting.com
Fee: £20 (members of SP or GBPF as guests)
Closing Date: 3/8/2013
Weigh-in: 9:00-10:30am
Lifting starts: 11:00am

Our next competition is the Unequipped Championships - no super suits, no knee wraps, no bench shirts. For all you lifters who compete raw this is your competition, and timed perfectly to fit in with the qualification for the GBPF Classic Championships (12th October, Horncastle Lincs).

In fact the World Classic Champs are on now (visit Goodlift for live streaming). There are quite a few Brits in the GB team, but no Scots. Looking at the totals we have had posted in last few comps there are several Scottish lifters who could be challenging for a place in the team. First step is to qualify and then lift at next GBPF Unequipped Champs - so do look at the qualifying totals and procedure that are on the GBPF website.

Scottish Powerlifting Juniors / Bench, 9th June, Palace of Arts, Glasgow

Another great competition and congratulations to all who lifted. A massive thank you to our guys running the platform - Robert Love, Willie Lincoln and Steven Fraser great job. Thank you to our referees: Alex Mathieson, Fred McKenzie and Jim McGill superb refereeing as expected from two Cat 2 and a Cat 1 referee, and to Marlene Mathieson, Campbell and Pat Higgins on the table great job folks.

We saw a few Scottish records get broken, Rhian Arnott with a clean sweep in the 84+ class, Lewis Kane with an impressively easy 150kg deadlift and total record as well, and Ewan Massie from Fraserburgh with some quality lifting for bench, deadlift and total records in U20 83kg class. Great to see Darren Bell lifting strong and taking the best lifter in the Juniors. For the bench we had one lady lifter - Lee Hellstrom with a nice 65kg bench. In the mens category it was very very close for the best lifter with Douglas Scott just pipping the rest with his 110kg press at 66kg bodyweight. Results are below and can also be seen on our website (http://www.scottishpowerlifting.com) and which will have records and rankings updated shortly.

Overall a great day and a massive thank you to all the lifters who took part, with a special thank you to all the Juniors and Victoria who travelled up at 5 am with Fred and Jim from Northumberland - thank you. Finally, thanks to all those who came along to support our competition your presence makes a difference and I know the lifters appreciate it.

Congrats to all the new Scottish Record holders and special mention to the new British record holders Marc Keys and Alistair Inglis. Marc increased his own UE bench with 192.5kg and big Alistair set the UE Junior Squat record with 300kg and Open record Deadlift with 320kg. Well done.
Great lifting from everyone else and hope you’ll all be back at the next comp to increase your PB’s and some may have their eye on records they came close to this time.

A special thanks to our loaders and officials for the day. With 38 lifters it was a long day.

Chris, Yes guest lifters are usually fine - but ultimately at the discretion of organiser. If you are a GBPF member then that will suffice in that regard. Entry form can be downloaded from our website (www.scottishpowerliting.com). Hopefully see you there.

Benvie - just to get back to your question, lifting as an equipped guest at the unequipped champs isn't possible as that is the one competition where unequipped lifters compete for a Scottish title, and even though a guest isn't competing for title it will disrupt flow of competition a bit. Looking at your numbers, you'd probably qualify for Scottish Seniors in Mastrick if you lifted unequipped anyway - and with opportunity to get an unequipped title as well. I'll have Qualifying Totals out soon.

Benvie - Good question - I'll have to get back to you on that one. We should have Qualifying Totals published in a day or two, and you may find that with your lifts you might be able to get QT unequipped anyway. Cheers,

The Scottish Seniors Championships are now confirmed for 26th October (Saturday) and will be held in Mastrick, Aberdeen. This is our top competition of the year, and the best lifters in Scotland will do battle for the prestigious best lifter trophies. It is an equipped competition, though lifters may compete unequipped if they wish, but there will not be any separation between equipped and unequipped lifters.

IMPORTANT: The SP Committee has decided to reinstate the requirement to meet a minimum Qualifying Total (we'll post in the next few days) to ensure a high standard of lifting, meaning it will be by invitation only. The required QTs can be achieved in any SP/GBPF competition in the previous 12 months but no sooner than eight weeks before the competition - meaning the last competition to qualify is the Scottish Unequipped in August. To give lifters as many opportunities as possible to qualify, we have removed the need to have lifted at either the Scottish Districts or Scottish Open.

3rd March, Scottish Districts Champs (Equipped and Unequipped), Palace of Arts, Glasgow

Please see Michelle's excellent full write-up which is on our website.

Well done to everyone who lifted at today's Scottish Districts some really awesome lifting. Four GBPF British Records (Rab Love, Louise Murray and Gary McConnachie) and plenty of Scottish records. It was great to see so many new faces lifting for the first time take to the platform and doing so well and we are looking forward to watching your progression throughout 2013. Also great to see some old faces returning after some time out and our usual suspects too!

A big thanks to Arthur Cowley and Steve Cumming for their great work loading and to the other couple of guys who kindly helped out (apologies for not having your names guys). It is hard work loading and spotting all day however all the lifters must appreciate that without people kind enough to do this we cannot safely run competitions. Also, thanks to Pat, Stephanie and Kieran for running the table and Alex and Campbell for refereeing.
