Came on the site after meeting joni (top man!) at severn valley novice strongman comp. Seems like theres some good advice and banter to be had here so I thought id double up my SDF log here. I see there are a few familiar names around.

Ive competed in two novice strongman comps this year and to be honest I got my arse handed to me in both. Learned loads and had a laugh so it was worth it though. Ive got myself some kit now so hopefully ill be more prepared for next season. Cant believe I used to keep myself amused with a barbell and plates when there are so many more wierd and wonderful things to lift! Anyway, down to business!

Training today:

Yoke:

160kg 13m+13m
160kg 13m+13m+13m+13m
200kg 13m+13m
240kg 13m+13m+13m PB
160kg 13m+13m+13m+9m - speed work

Farmers (10m course):

50kg x 20m
70kg x 20m
50kg x 20m

Had my cousin Frankie training with me today. First time hed had a go on any SM kit. At 66kg BW he managed a 200kg yoke for 26m with a drop to turn which I thought was pretty good as he only does strength training for judo.

Yoke PB felt comfortable. Probably could have gone further but I didnt want to push it too much. Only went light on farmers as my shoulders still giving me gyp.

Got some vids of the yoke:

All I can say is they worked really well for me. If a beginner asked me about squatting id recommend them! Tongue

I have tried them icepick, and i'm not condemning them, I see them as a useful assistance exercise.

My problem is, when prople replace free squat for box squat and/or totally neglect the free squat.

Why have you got a problem with it?

I use box squats all the time. I used to hate squatting and my squat was stuck at 140-150kg for a loong time. Started box squatting last year and put 40kg on my PB in less than a year. I like them because it removes any doubts about how deep your squat is so I can just concentrate on lifting. I do squat off a low box (22cm) which I know alot dont. Vid of me box squatting:

If you do them I would recommend training with different box heights to stop a weakness developing.

The ROM of the lift in that vid is mildly amusing. The ROM in this one is quite funny:

Nice PB on the push press joni!

Just go and enjoy yourself joni! Thats what we do this for mate. If you relax and take the pressure off yourself youll do better than you think. The experience is going to be valuable to you wherever you place.

I definately could not outrun an olympic lifter. Especially over 35m. As they are the fastest creature known to man over that distance. Apparently.

I always thought you were a bodybuilder from reading your log. lol

Although dan will always deny it he harbours a secret desire to to get oiled up and flex his pecs on stage.
