» Sports science degree (Go to post)04-01-2008 @ 14:46
My advice would be to do the degree. Once you have it they can never take it away, no matter how irrelevant it becomes in the future. Mine, in engineering, was back in 1980 and almost everything I learnt then is now completely irrelevant.

However, potential employers still like to see the word degree on a CV. To employers, it is more about your general level of inteligence and ability to learn than the subject that the degree was taken in.

It is always a bonus though if the subject is something that you are genuinely interested in.

Great deadlifts. Well done. Looks like their is more in reserve as well.
Technically, with BWLA you become an M2 in the year of your 50th birthday. So if your 50th is in 2008 you are an M2 from Jan 1st 2008.

hope so finch. How long do you think it will take you to get down to 110?

If I can lose 10 kilos in 6 weeks, I'll be lifting at 110 at the East Midlands un-equipped on Feb 10th.
However, I have not been under 110 kilos for as long as I can remember.

forgot to mention my weigh in this morning. 99.6kg. i'll weigh in at the start of every month with the aim of putting on a kg a month.

99.6?
By the time I've lost 10 kilos you'll be lifting in the 110's like me.

Wednesday 2nd Jan.

Trained at the Yardley Gobion Club tonight, they had a good crowd of about 12-14 lifters in, all very pleasant and helpfull, a nice bunch of lads (but are'nt most power lifters?). As our calibrated scales are up at the New Farm Gym there was no official weigh in, however I was 119.4 kilos on my home scales this morning, so I reckon that equates to a good 120+ in real money (Heavy Xmas).

Squatting with Kevin and Steve Walker (I keep good company don't I? One a 2006 IPF Masters world champion and the other a current IPF Masters world champion), shame they had to keep unloading the bar when it was my turn and then raising the rack height by about a foot. Benching with Kevin and Ed Clarke.

Squat
5 x 75
5 x 115
4 x 135
2 x 155
2 x 155
3 x 155
Pleased with this. The first set of 155's was going to be 3x and then I was going to come down in weight and do some lighter reps, however I found their bar to be very "whippy" and I almost fell over on the first set. The second set was better but I bottled out of a 3rd squat. Nailed it in the end though and I'm pleased to report that they were all good deep squats.

Bench
10 x 40 Close Grip
10 x 40 Wide Grip
10 x 40
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 90
2 x 100 Both paused
1 x 105 Paused
1 x 110 Paused
1 x 115 Paused
1 x 117.5 Paused
3 x 100 Close Grip
6 x 90 Close Grip
10 x 80 Close Grip
5 x 70 Wide Grip
Pleased with these, all the paused lifts were to calls and despite the fact that Kevin (Miserable Sod) called the 117.5 a no lift (uneven lock out), it was all me.

39 days to my competition and I need to lose 10 kilos in weight, squat 180, bench 120 and deadlift 210 to qualify for the British U/E as an M2 - WHAT CHANCE??????
» Is anyone ever actually jealous of another lifter? (Go to post)02-01-2008 @ 16:14
I'm jealous of all those people who just walk in of the street and lift more than me after just a couple of sessions - bas***ds. However, I cannot be jealous of anybody that I know has trained hard to be lifting what they are lifting - only admiration for their hard work.

One thing I would say from reading your journal is that you seem to go for max singles a lot - especially on bench and deadlift. Maybe you would be better concentrating on going for more rep PBs and getting some quality volume in - 3s, 5s and so on - then maxing every couple of months.

Don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do, but that's what I think!!

Best of luck with next year anyway mate, keep training hard!

Thanks Rob, I'll definately be changing the training routine after my comp in Feb.
» anyone got a hangover? (Go to post)01-01-2008 @ 15:05
Got to bed around 3. Just got up.
No hangover but mouth feels like I have been licking the bottom of the budgies cage. I must have worked it off boxing and bowling on the Wii for 2 hours after midnight.

When I was in Glasgow on business last year I spent some time training at the Venice Gym. 0141 554 7184. I can't remember what the owners name was but he was okay.
They also have a good group of powerlifters working out there.
