» how would you adapt the 5/3/1 routine............... (Go to post) | 24-06-2010 @ 23:25
I've been thinking about doing something like this Tues squat 5/3/1 front squat 3x6 bb lunge 3x10 chins 3xf sled pull with harness Thurs BP 5/3/1 Inc log press 3x5 NBP 3x5 Jerk 3x8 Atlas stone Sat DL 5/3/1 BO Row 3x6 P.clean 3x6 B.ext 3x10 Sled pull arm over arm Sun Press 5/3/1 Log press 5/3/1 Dips 3xf Single DB press 3x3 Farmers/Frame walk Not sure if jerk is on right day or wether two lots of pressing 5/3/1 is too much, I'm new to strongman so any advice is more than welcome.

Post Edited: 30.05.2010 @ 21:40 PM by Simon_T Just thought i'd post my thoughts on this my first comp. I thought it was well run and organised it was just a shame about the weather. When i got there and saw the truck i was going to pull i had my doubts that i'd be inside the 90sec limit, as my only training for this was pulling a weighted sled around my back garden, sometimes with my 5 year old sat on top as well, so i was quite aprehensive. I was midway down the order so i had a chance to see how it was done, and there was no-one over a minute, so my turn came and up i stepped, harnessed up, grabbed the rope, and when the whistle went i just pulled like a madman. Near the end i couldn't get my hands moving fast enough so threw the rope and finished in around 32secs (i think), well chuffed, and totally spent. Next came the overhead medley, now this i have practised in my garage with a homemade wooden log, 2" bar, and dumbell. I was in the 4th pairing to go in this event and saw quite a few fail on the axle, so up i stepped nailed the log quite easily, grabbed the axle cleaned it and then realised, when my wrist nearly snapped, that it was fixed, that i was not prepared for but still completed the 2 reps and then the 1 on the dumbell, in 42secs (i think), again quite happy. Husafeld stone next, have practised this by carrying a heavy sack 40m, up and down my drive, so when i was informed that we were going for distance not time i thought, ah well lets just go for it, but this time i was up first so didn't know what to expect, once i'd picked up the stone, which initially didn't feel too heavy, i was off when i got to the first turn i re-adjusted my grip and found a more comfortable position which allowed me to pick up some speed and i got through three more turns before i ran out of gas around the 85m mark (i think) Farmers hold i was not looking forward to this cos every time i've tried this my time has got worse so when i stepped up towards the end of the group i knew that i needed to get over 1min for some good points, when i stepped up to the farmers opposite me holding the other farmers was the same fella that i was up against in the medley (Ben?) and he completed that quicker than me, so my first thought was, "i'm not letting go before you". So when we both got to 1min i was beginning to have doubts, after some inspiring words by the ref (Cowdrey i think) 1min 10 passed and Ben dropped his farmers, 2 secs later my right hand gave way, 1min 17secs, well and truely happy, only managed 1min in training. I was a bit gutted that the atlas stones was dropped, but understandable. So after some time for the officials to work out scores i find out i came 6th. Which i was over the moon about, so i'm now on the lookout for my next novice comp either beginning of august or september/october time. Just like to say thanks to john strange, (maybe you could verify my times ![]()

Awsome comp, I was well impressed as it was my first time watching a strongman event live, really got me up for my first one as a competitor in a couple of weeks. I was wondering how long u guys rest before a competition or do you train right up to the day? I was thinking of having an events day on the Sunday then nothing till comp on following Saturday, what do you think?
