Would you pull a deadlift with bent arms?

If your by taller than me I would imagine it's nion impossible to flip with out having a slight bend as I'm the right height for my arms to be straight and my shoulders touching the tire

Ps I'm 5'6.5" and most people are alot more than that. Apart from Wayne c

Joni said:Another comp weekend, and again tyre flip events claim a set of biceps.

UKSC englands strongest man finals - heavy ass tyre claimed two biceps.

Mark Clegg tore his at the UKs 105 comp.

Any ideas on how to eliminate these? In some countries i dont think they have all that many bicep tears with tyres, or am i misinformed?

I think the main things to prevent tyres to cause bicep tears from comp organisers point of view are:

- the tyre is not crazy heavy

- the tyre has a good grip

or is there anything that can be done?

this is a good point.

IMO i think some tyres are to heavy for certain comps

to many people tryin to deadlift them (myself included till i saw a video the thing put up)

no warming up, huge strain on tiny ligaments n muscles especially when cold

To be perfectly honest I do think that the tyres are becoming to heavy. It's a speed and technique event for me. At a national comps you should expect all guys to be able to complete the course.

Also I agree that grip has a factor. But so does technique, as in the positioning of the arms. I've seen some poor technique in my time but then I've not witnessed many tears. Are the tyres to heavy.

Also the fact that athletes are no taking more "meds" does play a part. The tendons become dry and britel, hence the tears are always full tears. That is just my opinion mind, with a bit of fact.

stainless said:Not to imply that it is for a second the only reason but i think that anyone who has less than 100% R.O.M at the elbow joint is an accident waiting to happen.I see an awful lot of guys whose arms at rest are 10 degrees plus off of full extension, further to this when they train arms they don't fully extend, this means that you have a big strong bicep used to handling loads for 95% of it's range. The tyre flip in particular at the beginning of the pull puts the bicep load straight onto it's weakest range.
If arms can be held straight at the start then the drive to start the lift comes from the legs then the hips. But with tight biceps the first thing that happens is the biceps are screaming as they get forced into full extension before the legs and hips can even initiate movement.
There was a thread a while back about whether or not to do direct bicep work.I think that if you have full 100% ROM then you don't need to but if you don't then you must work to make your biceps full and long to avoid injuries.

Long biceps...a few fresh points

my opinion is that is just unfortunate accidents, there are so many variables why people get injured.i've know more people who been injured on a yoke so are we going to stay under 350kg. things get heavy( at the englands 8 people didn't get hurt on the trye)so with that things will snap and break .i have the deepest sympathy for people who get injured but that is sport.

It seems like now everybody wants there comps to be heavier than the last one. Then everybody says you have to make it heavier to progress, but in reality you are just making people take more meds to deal with the heavier comps. Comps can't just keep getting heavier at this rate forever!

id say this is probably y most people tear them. because its the most flips or fastest time on a tyre that wins. So you gotta give it your all as fast as you can.

Gonna throw this one out there and paraphrase my old mate Forbes Cowan who was of the opinion that if you want to continue with a strongman career then you should consider NOT having your biceps reattached as they are not that necessary for strongman and if left to repair themselves they will in time rejoin further up the bone providing enough strength for strongman events without the danger of further detachment.
I'm not saying i necessarily agree with this but when i look at poor old Kevin Nee you can see that he is incredibly strong but his mega tight torn biceps don't seem to be doing him much good.
Given the loads that today's strongmen are lifting more tears are clearly inevitable unless athletes take their ROM and flexibility as seriously as their strength training.

For me the events that cause the most injuries are
tyre flip
axle deadlift no straps
conans wheel
and wrestling
all have cause a lot of injuries

There has been loads of bicep tears with axle deadlift guys tend to twist their wrists round and pull more with the bicep to stop the grip failing
put bicep tear into you tube and there is about 3 videos of guys tearing it doing axle deadlift
I think kevin knee pulled his doing it
