does having a big belly make you more powerful?
if so why?

continental lifts are made possible by having the power belly, thus enableing you to lift far far more overhead without years of olympic training. Grin

shortens stroke for bench. can help in squat aswell. solid base for overheads. though at a guess its just a running joke for lifters who are on the portly side hahaGrin also for the most part, they hinder in deads.

Well, I think a power belly should be differentiated from the classic gut.

When you aim to get a power belly you should aim to do it through training hard and eating loads.

Extra bodyweight obviously has connotations with increased strength. This isn't to say that an extra 5kg of fat will make you stronger - but you have the potential to carry the most muscle while you are at your fattest and consuming large amounts of calories.

I really don't think it gets in the way of lifting either Mike - Andy Bolton and Rezazadeh being pertinent examples!

Actually, a lot of guys deadlifts go up as they lose the gut. It enables them to get into a better mechanical position at the start of the pull. Bolton is large but he's also tall, so he can get in the desired position easier.

Razza is slightly different as although he is a true freak, he only ever needs to pull ~280kg from the floor.

But, the power belly is most certaintly FACT!

I was wandering the other day is it easier for lighter lifters to get multiple x bodyweight lifts?

Eg if someone was 60 kg and had 180kg deadlift (3x) and the same person gained 20kg BW, they would need a 240kg deadlift for 3x.

Putting on 20kg wouldnt mean a 60kg increase in strenght?

I was just thinking about someone like Kutcher who has something crazy like a 900+ total at 75kg, and what if a SHW like Bolton had a 12x (+) BW total.

Maybe not of that makes sense Embarassed but basically what i am asking i think is, is bodyweight directly proportional to strength?

I've just confused myself Unhappy

I believe the power to weight ratio is of advantage to those skinny bas***ds like me. Sounds much more difficult to double bw squat when you're over 100kg . Dead weight is dead weight, power/lean body mass ratio should be more accurate imo.
Wilks is a good way to put a number on that though, even if it is about the big 3 only!

The bigger you are the harder it'll be to get your xBW lifts as good as a lighter lifter, becuase the actual amount of weight lifted is heavier. That sounds stupid I know, but when you look at world class lifters, as the weight classes get heavier, the heaviest totals get closer and closer to the current human limit.

A lighter guy can lift well within human limits, but be the absolute best ever for his weight class.

You also have to make a distinction between BW and LBM. Fat doesnt lift weight but there are lifts where it can help, and the bench and squat are the easiest examples.

I think its also helpful to make a distinction between getting stronger and getting better at a powerlift. If I put on 20kg, my leverages change, my muscles may be no stronger, but the shorter bench stroke will certainly make me a better powerlifter. If we were to look at some of the things Siff comments on in Supertraining like cross sectional muscular size, and nueromuscular efficiency then these things may not have improved one iota, but my total will have gone up.

So, did I get stronger?

thats sort of the thing i was getting atGrin its the only power/strength movement that i know where people can progress quite a bit on, whilst simulataneously losing weight. though i was going to mention about about mr bolton, he has a tremendous power gutConfused Grin

Power belly is most certainly fact.

But, for us competing and wanting to get the best from a restricted weight class, it really isn't a luxury we can afford.

That extra weight is actually better placed elsewhere. Lost the flab and gain more muscle, you'll be stronger for it.

If weight isn't a concern, then power belly away. It really does help.
