getting my entire forearm done next week, will i have to take time off training? ive read that its fine to 'exercise' if you cover it carefully etc, but i assume those articles are aimed more at cardio. any chance things like deadlifts, rows with straps or benches and presses where im gripping the bar could mess with it?

Obviously you'll not be able to have anything tight against it such as sleeves, wrist wraps or straps. I'd of thought you'd be ok if it's loosely covered.

If it scabs over then be weary of it cracking whilst you train as it will spoil it. Keep it moist! I heard cocount oil is amazing for new tattoos.

Yeah as above. No sleeves, wraps, the obvious stuff. For some of my work I just covered it with bepanthen, wrapped in cling film and trained around it for weed or two mate. I guess forearms one of the most exposed areas to lifters, so go careful with it

As said above bepanthen and cover with cling film but as soon as you're done shower, clean it and re apply cream. Dont worry about it too much. If you're doing cardio however keep it aired and wrap it if you're doing anything that might touch it I.e. Stones or any other Schmidt like that.

If he's getting a full sleeve I wouldn't be touching stones at all, covered or not! Eek

Stone sleeves

Not whilst its healing mate, f**k that, guessing you haven't got any ink? whilst it's healing and scabbing it wants as little contact/pressure as possible. New tats are delicate, it's quite easy to f**k them up.

Once it's healed however, yeah sleeves are the way to go.

Scabs are a pain with tattoos. I lost about half the lines on my toes with bits of scab falling out with all the ink.
Leaving clingfilm on for a week seemed to keep it in better the second time, but it didn't get any cheaper the second time.
E45 cream was what I used to moisturise under the clingfilm. Its scentless and has no alcohol. Clingfilms what they use to stop scarring with burns. It stops the cut building up a scab by limiting contact with air and keeps the cut/tattoo clean. Feels uncomfortable, because of the heat, but its great for heavy work like portraits with a lot of fine lines.
I'd avoid anything that can scratch, bump rub your arms for 2 weeks.

I was told to let it breathe and use pile cream to keep it moist/itch free, but that was 10+ years ago.

E45's probably adding to the issue you had with ink falling out, it contains lanolin which draws ink out of a healing tattoo. As far as I understand though, it's fine to use as a moisturiser after it's healed - I used it on my first tattoo for a few days and it didn't heal as well as the work I've had since, which I've used Bepanthen to heal, same artist too.

OP; Echoing what others have said, keep it covered for the first while and wear loose clothing, don't go dragging elbow sleeves over it or use wrist straps/wraps for at least 2 weeks (personally I'd leave it longer) but so long as all the scabbing and peeling has cleared up you'll be okay. Shower straight after the gym and give it a good clean with anti-bac soap.

Your artist will, or certainly should, give you some advice so ask him/her Happy all the best bro, it doesn't tickle!

I had about 12 hours over 2 days on my left leg last week so that's been hampering my training slightly!

Just f**king punch robert patrick from terminator 2; if you don't punch like a b**ch, your forearm will gloop in him and you'll have a mansized liquid metal forearm guard to keep it safe, and produce for you many knives and stabbing weapons.

Just have 4-5 days off from doing anything that will work the forearms much or rub etc. I wouldnt do stones till it was prop healed a good week.

Whats the point in rushing things!

thanks to everyone who replied, so do we think i could get away with regular bench press within a few days after? worried about the wrist bending back pulling on the skin and the muscles moving when i grip, guess ill try and leave it as long as possible.
