im trying to put on a Royal Navy's Strongest man and need to fill in shed loads of paper work and write a letter to the commanding officer of the base i want to hold it at requesting premision and explaining what strongman is

iv riped this from the net so far
Initially, eight men representing various sports and strength disciplines were invited to compete against each other in unique events designed to test each individual to the fullest extent. The earliest events were relatively crude, but new ideas were introduced over the years. Some events had a basis in both powerlifting and Highland Games heavy events, and others were created based on mythological feats of strength. There are a number of events that make up each competition.

"Have you ever seen World's Strongest Man on television? You know, where they pull trucks, flip tyres, lift stones? That's it."
Is how I explain to anyone and they always get it.

Wouldn't the Royal Navy's Strongest Sailor or the Royal Navy's Stronmgest Seaman be a better title?

Put a DVD in with the letter.

Surely everyone's seen WSM??!

Just mention the name "Geoff Capes" and all will become clear.

I wouldn't even go with much bulls**tting about the history of the sport.

I would just go along the lines of ....

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request your permission to hold a sporting competition called 'The Royal Navy's Strongest Man' at HMS NELSON on XX Jan 2011.

The sport of strongman involves various events which I believe not only test strength, but the core values of the service such as courage and integrity.

(Go into brief detail of timings and place i.e. car park closure/gym events, number of people expected, who will action what).

The competition will be open to first timers and will include coaching as required. A full risk assessment will be carried out and medically qualified personnel will be on hand.

Yours Aye,

(Insert rate) John Strange HMS XXXXXX

Notes...... strongest man, fine, are you doing strongest woman??? think e&d
i havent checked spelling and grammar. the point is the letter would not really need to be more than 3 or 4 paragraphs. not that much detail.
to be honest mate unless you have already been told otherwise id be surprised if this got past his secretary.
i dont know if you have spoken to topsy in nelson gym but he is a crossfit competitor and would probably be keen to help out, he is currently stripping all machines out of the weights room and putting racks and bumper plates in for functional stuff, so this is right up his street.

cheers dave

if there is scope(3 or 4 min) il put on a strongest woman too. i spoke to the PTI's at nelson last week and they seem to think whale island or collingrad would be the best bet and march is a likely time.

lol they're probably just trying to save work on their behalf

collingwood would be simpler to get civvies in on.... as it is not a working dockyard obviously,

both cwood and whale island have a bigger thru traffic of people to actually see the sport in action, nelson is quite a sleepy base i think and not many people would get to see what it's all about.... so yeah collingwood would be good with all the new trainees. also cwood has alot of heavy stuff over at the leadership school which could make interesting events, so yeah maybe i see their point.

have you considered events/level yet?

Its going to mixed level I'm thinking 5 events yoke about 260, max deadlift, tyre, db press they can choose 40,50 or 60kg dbs and stones over the yoke with say 80,100 and 130 stone

Hello mate the comp looks good, just one question is this just for the Navy or will you consider letting other Forces compete? Im in the Army and we have a good Strongman following within my garrison. I am currently trying to make Strongman a recognised sport in the Army so that we can get funding and sponsorship in order to compete at civvi comps and i reckon that if a team of Squaddies were to compete against a team of Matlos it could help to popularise the sport within the Forces world.

What do you think?

I can't answer for John.... but.... from what I understand this comp is a Navy only one but an inter services might be a follow-up idea.

Would be good to compete against some army lads and I think I will be doing so at the yorkshires next year.
