Tried a deadlift for the first time with an axle bar and was not the result I expected, didn't move, so yes too heavy to start with... So, any tips for gripping it

Not sure I understand. How heavy was it, what kind of grip did you use, and why were you surprised that you couldn't lift it?

You can switch grip up to the same weight as on a regular bar, give or take, but it's not recommended because of increased tension on the biceps. Most people use straps.

If you're going with a double overhand grip then obviously you're not going to lift very heavy. Some people find a thumbless grip works a bit better, but in any case you won't get much past 50-60% of your regular 1RM.

The order of difficulty for me is thus:

Switch Grip Deadlift
Double Over Hand Deadlift
Axle DOH Deadlift
Fat Gripz Deadlift on standard bar

I have a poor deadlift, but long slender fingers, and have got within a hairs breadth of 170kg on axle: but 140kg is my max on Fat Gripz.

However, I have seen people MUCH stronger than me fail at 140kg on an axle.

Start light.

Paul Savage is the daddy of grip, and he recommended holds for time - rather than just banging out reps.

Axle DL with mixed grip is nasty. I did it in a comp once (240kg x 3). My biceps survived, but one of the other competitors wasn't so lucky.

Same grip for both hands, over grip if that makes sense. It was my first time using an axle and could not get 150kg off the floor, I expected to be a doddle. Lowered to 120kg and that was a piece of piss. 150 just rolls out of my grip, so i need to improve my grip

I'd try some timed holds with 100 - 120kg.

After about ten seconds, it probably won't feel quite so easy.
