As title says dieting or being in a cal deficit is a waste of time Unless you complete in weight classes(even then debatable) or compete in Bodybuilding (where 3% is needed).

My logic is - if you permanantly eat a cal surplus Without paying too much attention obviously not Mcdonalds everynight this will allow you to make consistent strength/muscle gains from your program (which we assume is put together properly) and eventually this will mean you will grow a load of muscle giving you a strong/appealing physique regardless?

I only ask as ive just dieted from 110kg to 88kg 10% over the last 14 weeks and lost a metric ton of strength, had i just ate normally and built muscle/strength over the course of a year or 2 i may have been 110kg muscular?

Any thought on this lets get a discussion going, Josh

I've slimmed down by 2 stones (by eating tangerines instead of chocolate) and am enjoying being lighter and having a flatter tummy. I don't think it's been a waste of time. I'm 42 and am thinking of health and longevity.

Would you have been 110kg lean without using PEDs? I doubt it.

If you eat in a calorie surplus indefinitely you will end up fat, no matter how much muscle you put on.

Eating McDonald's every night is probably pretty unhealthy but shouldn't make that much of a difference to weight gain/loss as that is almost entirely down to total calorie consumption/expenditure.

Is dieting a waste of time? No. It's a means to get from one body composition to another.

I eat for health now and to be lean, not interested in continually growing. And feel much better for it mentally and physically

I think most people should definitely aim to spend the majority of most training years in a small surplus or maintaining. Keep the cutting too a minimum.

However at roughly 30% body fat at 110kg you were probably right to cut.

The job you have now is to gain slowly, so you don't return to 30% and begin a cycle of yo yo dieting over the next few years. That can be a lot more damaging than one necessary cut. Gain slow, periodically trim up if needs be, continue gaining.

Far better to be in a consistent but small surplus for 6 to 9 months, than large uncontrolled bulks which simply end too fast.

I agree with what the others have said. Without PEDs your hormones alter depending on bodyfat % also, being less favourable at a higher % meaning that you are more susceptible to gaining fat than muscle.

This post nails it. If average height, no c**t is ripped at 110.

Wow that’s a lot of weight in a short time. You have to get used/stabilized for a couple of months to that body weight before your strength will improve.

For a guy of say 5’ 10” to be so is world class and will involve ‘world class’ PED use. For some context Phil Heath is around 240 (109kg) at 5’ 9” in stage condition.

I agree fully with Danny.

Long term healthy nutrition is the key.

Dieting in terms of Atkins, South Beach, Keto, Soup Diet etc
will never work in the long term, and you will have the yo-yo effect and weight cycling which is dangerous.

Good nutrition and education and learning about good nutrition is of crucial importance.
