Just entered this. It will be my first comp ( I'm very new to powerlifting) and I'm buzzing. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Don't stress or get yourself worked up about it, a little nervousness and anticipation is expected especially as it is your first time.

Talk to other lifters, you can learn a lot in the right company of people more experienced

Do your best on the day and above all else, enjoy!

First of all try and enjoy yourself, with it been your first you'll be excited nervous and s**tting yourself all at the same time!! Grin
Its totally normal dont worry about it, regards to the lifts themselves try not to rush them and listen to the refs commands there very important,if your not sure on this maybe try and familiarise yourself before hand. Plus i think the organizers will give you the basics at the begining of the day.

Kit wise make sure your wearing Y-front/briefs as boxers are not allowed, have a singlet/leotard and long socks for deadlifts. And if your not sure on something just ask most people are more than willing to help.

I'll be there on the day most probably spotting on squats from behind.Hope this helps. Wink

Do I need a singlet/leotard for deadlifts? I feel more comfortable in shorts and tshirt. Plus, I've entered classic, are they allowed in that? Sorry if that's a daft question

Yes you will Niall for all lifts, you can wear a plain t-shirt underneath it but obviously no shorts.
It wont restrict you in anyway I promise.

Pick an opener that you can do for a set of 3. Listen to the commands (squat/rack, start/press/rack, down). Watch others to see how long you'll have to wait for those commands.

Don't eat things you don't normally. Just because other people do, doesn't mean you should too.

Don't laugh at the head ref for looking like he's doing a Nazi salute when he's waiting to give you the down command for your deadlifts (or salute back. This is not funny.)

Get chatting to a few people. Powerlifting comps are usually very friendly.

I'll add 3 things: openers, warmups and rack heights...

not sure how gbpf work but assume you'll be asked to set rack heights for
squats and bench early on. With squat walkout you'll either want stands in or out and a pin height, bench is just a pin height. There'll be a few lifters all doing this so don't feel rushed, take your time and get loaders to adjust the equipment until it feels right for you.

At weigh in openers will be asked for so as said before pick easy ones being your first meet. Don't deviate from what your training is at. completely ignore what others are doing.

Warmups - aim to start 30-40 mins before your flight gets called to platform. Hopefully be other lifters around in your flight. listen for announcements don't be afraid to ask official or other lifter exactly when (times tend to drift here). Key to warmup again is you'll be with others again which you may be unused to if train alone. Always take your time and put the weights on you want to warmup with, again don't worry what others are doing - this is a warmup for 3 attempts, not a training session, so keep reps low and go up to about a 90% of planned opener. If you are opening conservatively as you should first comp then all should feel good here.
