How did you get on?
Probably last I think, but PBed in DL and Squat.

What did you learn from it?
That a comp brings out the best, the buzz gives you more strength, makes you conform properly to a set of rules, no room for half baked lifts

Did it influence your training post competition or did you carry on as before?
Yep, couldnt wait to get in the gym and train for the next comp

Did anything else about you change (diet/tactics/programming/rest periods/mentality)?
Train hard and stick at it

My first comp was the GPC British Qualifier last March.

I won my group in the 82.5kg teens. It was nothing like I expected as everyone was so supportive and willing each other on and helping one another out.

However I trained only 2 days before and I learnt that rest days are a must before comp if you wanna perform at your best haha.

I also learnt that I'm in this sport for life!

First ever comp was raw, back in 2002 weighing 80kg, squatted 150, benched 110, pulled 220.

First equipped 2003 same bodyweight, squatted 200, benched 135, pulled 260.
Enjoyed it wanted to do more, never had injuries, could train like hell, unlike now.

In 2004 my training partner organised a small local strongman comp and there was an under 15 stone class, which I won (out of 5 competitors), although the weigh-in was relaxed and I think I was the only person who did actually weigh under 15 stone! I don't count this comp though because of the own kit advantage. I learnt that my strongman strength is much better than my powerlifting/gym strength.

I did a little bit of powerlifting before I did strongman, so my first ever strength sports comp was actually a powerlifting comp I did in 2003 (I think) - without even training for it. Think I did 150/120/212.5. I was pretty much just training front raises and good mornings in my garage and had never trained squats.

My 2nd strongman comp was a little one at the gym - "Colchester's Strongest Man" - in which I came 4th out of 6.

What I'd consider to be my first PROPER strongman comp was a novice one in Bexleyheath in 2005 which had 37 competitors. They said they were scoring everybody in the first event (log) and then just the top half in the other events. I got 4 reps on the log, but ended up with 0 points overall Confused

o/h medly 3x80kg log and 2x90 axle, 50 dumbell 1 on each arm, thought how can u press 50 on 1 arm so no dumbell 4 me, funny how easy it is after learning it properly

Gbpf north west last December. Got every lift 3 whites and deadlifted my lifetime goal of 250kg, needless to say tgat is nolonger my lifetime goal!

I learnt that powerlifting is more about being against your self and supporting each other. The most enjoyable bit (other than breaking my own personal records) was seeing people who are supposed to be competitors being really helpful and supportive.

How did you get that good from just front raises and GMs and what made you decide on those 2? Bit of a strange combination

My first comp was last March at Results novice comp.
I came fourth despite being about the 2nd lightest there.

What did I learn?
That I am rubbish at yokeGrin Strongman is full of really good, supportive people and the level of support from complete strangers is fantastic.

Did it influence my training?
Yes, it made me more focused and exposed areas of weakness that I needed to work on.

Did anything else about you change (diet/tactics/programming/rest periods/mentality)?
Yes, in both good and bad ways. I started taking things a bit too seriously after placing so well in a first comp against bigger competitors and started to lose some of the enjoyment. It also made me realise how much a little mistake can cost against other competitors.

Genetics and belief in what I was doing maybe?

Shoulder press used to bother my spine before I got into strongman and developed a strong trunk, so I just did front raises... for singles Happy

GM seemed like a decent enough strength movement.

I wasn't taking training at all seriously.

I did the first champions of the future comp at osg in 2011.

I came 6th was pleased.
I was first person to get a rep on the car deadlift but came 3rd or 4th in that event.
I Learned to not go into a comp with a s**te log press, also learned to not dick about on slippy sandbag loading and not try to retack too often during stones.
Nothings really changed aprt from my hair has grown back

Some really cool stories here guys! Feeling a bit nervous but putting no pressure on myself. So long as I beat the strongman event lifts I did last week, I'll be happy.
