martinb said:For the first time today I watched the ssm qualifier and thought there are A LOT of guys who either now or in coming years with be serious strongmen, competing for the uks, and even bsm and beyond.

Nick had a superb day, I did not realise just how strong he was, and he showed how proper strength can often make up for a lack of event or competition experience. Made a mistake or two, but he will learn from them.

Hunter was consistent as can be and hit a massive pb on the deadlift all while protecting a small bicep injury

Tom, got the feeling he was taking it pretty easy, especially by the way he destroyed the 185 stone.

John, 11 reps on a 280 dead, in just a belt, NO STRAPS, and he wasn't happy!

Cherry, trained as little as I have seen him for a comp, but a 50 % cherry was still plenty good enough for 2nd.

Lewis and gary have missed out a few times in tge past so I was really pleased that they qualified

Ken, really suffering from cramps, he'll figure out what was wrong and fix it, I have no doubt

Luke, eh where the hell have they been hiding this guy? I look forward to seeing him at one of the big events on the athletic events, he will turn heads!

Looking forward to the most competitive, highest level SSM EVER

Another guy with a lot of potential was Brian Wilson (the big lad with the beard from Ayrshire), if he can get his static strength up to the same level as his moving events he'll be a real contender.

Strongmen are like buses-you wait for one for ages and then four all come along at once. This qualifier will be remembered as the year of new faces. Good all round performances from just about everyone. No slackers. No prima-donnas.Great atmosphere ,good crowd and as expected from the Master Blaster Stuart Murray and crew another well thought out and well executed professional comp.
There’s a new kid in town and his name’s Luke Stoltman, big, strong, athletic and although lacking comp experience, non too shabby in technique. His arm over arm and shield carry being especially impressive.
Thomas Parkes, still a junior, although he looks like he’s been in long trousers for some time, also displayed incredible potential and really looked like he was nowhere near flat out throughout the whole day. Despite a couple of little novice mistakes like a missed dumbell rep, a dropped deadlift and twenty second break for cramp during the arm over arm he easily coasted into a half point off third place. His 185kg stone load was the easiest i’ve seen and had the 210 been rolled out i’d have fancied his chances at loading that too.
Newbie number three was Mark Hunter, looks like he could be Nathan Jones’s wee brother, Mark was outstanding and just didn’t really put a foot wrong the whole day, again his arm over arm was flawless, only about two seconds behind Luke in an event that only about 7 out of 22 finished.
Next-the Milky Bar kid Nick Foxall. At only 20 years old this baby faced assassin has truck loads of potential. I’ll say it right here-this guy is another Marius, but only if someone takes him in hand and actually does some serious event training with him. 8 solid reps on the 280 deadlift. Despite doing the loading event like a house-wife who’d won a 90 second trolley dash through Tesco and stopping the arm over arm with 6 inches to go and 10 sec still on the clock he still secured a 6th place, a place which in no way reflects his true potential.
So that’s the 4 new faces, elsewhere John(IRON FIST) Hutton had a stand out day with 11 reps on the deadlift-no straps,”never used them” says John, good stone run, consistent throughout.
Stevie Cherry, who no doubt came to the comp expecting just to have to look out for Ken, appeared to take his foot off the gas a little when he saw his nemesis faltering, could not have expected the performance that came from Luke.
The big surprise of the comp has to be the current champ’s failure to qualify. Ken,it has to be said has had a bad year last year, out with a detached bicep. He started off with an explosive first event taking 2nd to Stevie, and from the shield carry on it all seemed to fall apart-cramp in his back, cramp in his hamstrings, and even on the stones we could all see his hand and wrist cramp up. So perhaps some diet or hydration problems he’ll have to sort out.
Conventionally, somebody at some point pulls out the final. So with 14 places and Ken sitting in first reserve we will see if he draws inspiration from Rocky Balboa “it ain’t how hard you can hit, but how hard you can get hit and keep going forward” and bounce back to fight for his title.Either way the final is looking interesting and the Scottish strongman scene a bit healthier.
On a side note, the comp within a comp for best beard was closely fought between Gary and Brian, Brian won by a whisker.
Well done everyone, sorry if i didn’t mention you, you all did great.
Roll on the final.
Full final scores to follow.

Great day yesterday and a big thank you to Stuart, Janet & crew for the first class show they put together. Unbelievable standard which made for a very tough qualifier but I'm happy to have made it through. Need to take training up a notch so I can be as competitive as possible & keep up with everyone in the final Grin Happy

Another vote for Gary's beard here. Better density and breadth

Brian's was admirable though

Some really impressive things happened yesterday, I think the whole Scottish scene just stepped up a notch and the final will be brilliant

Kudos to all involved

Disappointed I could come down but from what has been posted it looks and reads to be a top comp with a healthy future in 4 new faces coming into the mix

Looks like a great comp, Stuart and the burns gyms guys never fail to deliver, I am really impressed with standard and I can't wait for final in June. it was a 2 horse race last year that went down to the wire, this year so many more talented guys in with a genuine shout of being crowned SSM
Another thing that really excites me is the potential for such a strong quartet going over to big glens uks, 2 years ago I was really proud how well the lads done, we had 2 almost 3 in the final and one on the podium. Then last year through injury and other issues we sent over a weaker Scottish contingent, but I honestly think the 4 that head to Belfast in aug will be the best we have ever sent.
Scottish strongman looks to be going from strength to strength and 2013 should be a great season
Can I also take this opportunity to say well done to a guy no one has mentioned he has only done a handful of comps and made final of Scottish in first attempt, well done John pollock he is a propper nice guy and small in comparison to most, he has achieved a lot in less than a year in the sport so well done to you sir

The standard this year has gone through the roof compared to the last couple. Some excellent new guys.

It was a fantastic comp, and the new boys are all great lads too. I struggled to enjoy it as i felt like death all day and was really struggling, but really looking forward to the final now. There will be some great battles, as hopefully everyone will be in shape for it.

It was a long day, but so many great performances. I am still not home yet after it, but will write more once i am still

Thanks to Stuart and his team, Burns Gym for hosting and well done Luke!! I had a brilliant time! Had a good battle between fellow Fifers, Sean and Danny at the bottom half of the results. Was great meeting new guys and learning all day. Highlights have to be John Pollocks log - balancing it on his head before locking out what a battle, Lukes shield run, John Huttons deadlift and Cherrys medley run. Scotlands Strongest Man will be a fantastic comp to watch!

Just to make John Huttons 11 reps on a 280 dead with no straps even more ridiculous he just posted a picture of his arm on facebook, bruised top to bottom, as he sustained some sort of bicep injury on the first event!
