29th April 2007, North West Unequipped, Rhino's Gym Oldham

Weigh In
104.6kg

Openers
After being roped into playing cricket yesterday I was pretty stiff so decided I would be more conservative on the openers, not knowing how much impact it would have.

I chose 155/92.5/185 respectively.

Squats
155 x 1
165 x 1
172.5 x 1

These were all not too hard though my form wasn't the best, they were coming up a bit wonky which was taking quite a bit of speed out of them. Still, I was happy with this and getting far more confident with each attempt after the nerves were out of the way. There was definitely a bit more in the tank here although possibly not enough for a PB.

Bench Press
92.5 x 1
100 x f
100 x 1

92.5 flew up, failed the second attempt by pressing straight up instead of backwards - once it got stuck I just couldn't get anything into it. Joe kept reminding me to press backwards for the third attempt - so I did, and it was easy. Probably another 5 kilos or so here but obviously the miss on the second one put pay to that. I really have to learn to remember to press backwards, I have been guilty of not doing it in the gym and this results in missing lifts I have the strength for.

Deadlifts
185 x 1
200 x 1
207.5 x f

185 was easy, 200 wasn't too bad, went for a PB attempt on the third. Usual story here I'm afraid! Flew off the floor and got stuck about three inches from lockout, gave it a good fight but it wasn't happening.

I did make the error of forgetting my deadlift slippers so was lifting in my squat shoes which didn't really help. Never mind though, I know there's a PB for me there soon. Doing them after squats for the first time also seemed a bit harder, something I need to do in training sometimes, although I have deadlifted and then squatted quite a bit.

Total
Squat 172.5, Bench 100, Deadlift 200 - Total: 472.5 kilos

Position
As the only junior in my category (110kilos), and indeed the only lifter at all in it for the three lifts, I won my category outright so got a nice gold medal.

Conclusions
Despite not getting the lifts I had planned on I was really pleased with the day and the competition as a whole. It was definitely a very new and learning experience - I know I will go into the next one a lot more confident.

I definitely need to be slightly stricter in my preparation the next time round, i.e. not spending all Saturday playing cricket and getting to bed earlier. Plus not forgetting my deadlift slippers (shame on me, Jonny!!).

The plan for this year was to go in and get experience, then aim to qualify for junior nationals next year. At 110 this will be 550, but at 100 its 520. Given that I weighed in 104 I may well look to qualify in the 100s next year.

I think there are three more regional comps this year so I'll definitely be doing some of them, all the experience I can get at this stage will be very beneficial.

Overall, a great day out, a very well run competition and a good experience. It was great to see so many faces off the website and from Adlington, thanks to everyone who helped out!

Well done Rob, nice right up sounds like you did ok. Although i would shy away from letting Alan know you played cricket all day Saturday prior to competing on the Sunday.

You'll know better next time. And you should be looking to get to a full 110 or beyond as a junior and pile some serious pounds on them Pb's never mind reducing!?!?!?!?

Looks like a solid first comp mate! As the others have said playing cricket all day certainly wont have helped, especially if it was your first time playing in a while.

Still, thats a solid first meet, nice one!

Yea you're probably right Jeff, plus being fat is a hell of a lot more fun. I will aim to do the same comp next year at a full 110. I might give the 125s a miss for a while though Wink

Have a think about doing the July comp as well. The more platform experience you get, the better. Good lifting on sunday by the way - next time stick to fielding the day before - somewhere right in the outfield with a big plate of butties.
