Rather sore today but that is to be expected!

The Plan

Next competition will be the Manchester and District (22nd July 2007). Will look to compete at 100 kilos in this one.

I'll have the best part of three months to prepare so I should be looking for 490-510 unequipped. We will have to see how my strength is affected by losing weight - I'm going to go on a diet for 6/7 weeks (started today sadly). Nothing fancy here, keep the protein high, cut out the s**t and lower the carbs on non training days.

I'm going to build my lifts back up gradually to the heavier stuff, for squats I will be following my own cunning routine - 'Toothpick's Linear Squat routine. Still to decide on deadlifts, perhaps Olly's routine alternating rack and sumo pulls as assistance.

Bench press I'm going to do some reps for 3-4 weeks then figure out a plan.

I'll also be adding cardio into the mix at least two times a week, building up to sets of 200m sprints. Then hopefully I'll be able to do myself some justice on the cricket field.

Good plans there Rob. I think I'm going to just train straight through to the British now, no comps in between - so I'll be able to come and support people at the Mcr and District (maybe even load!) without having to worry about lifting.

Losing some weight is definitely the right thing to do. You can start putting on some quality weight again once you've lost the fat.

Definitely concentrate on those lockouts! Honestly, I am so convinced about my advice on this one - don't go monstrously heavy for singles out of the rack. Keep it submaximal, get 3-5 reps in and keep the bar in your hands for the whole set, just pushing the hips through and squeezing the glutes for each one. The motor pattern isn't right if you just pull them out of the rack all the time - especially for you IMO, having seen excatly how you fail.

Yea I think you're right mate, Andy Bolton says a very similar thing about rack pulls [5s are most effective]. I will definitely give it a go!

5s would be precisely my recommendation also. I look forward to seeing no more deadlifts stalling at lockout after being ripped off the floor!

Wow just seen the deadlift vids, I feel your pain on those lockouts bro, so many factors to consider for solutions, but before running off to start overloading and training the top end, I'll make sure basics are covered - mobility, mobility and some more mobility, you glutes may not be firing properly, hip flexors are tight, etc there are plenty of good stuff on t-nation on how to get the glutes working. definately worth checking out.

You're definitely right about there being so many seeming solutions.

I'd like to think my mobility and flexibility are good (although I'm sure they could always be better). I always do dynamic warmup before lifting which includes various glute activating exercises (x-band walks, bridges, bird dog) and stretch my hip flexors too.

I suppose the only way I will find the solution is through trying everything over time!

Cant see your DL vids Rob, but I imagine they were done in Adlington real time/ slow mo???
You ever see me or Wigan struggle with a pull past the knee? Delroy McQueen was obviously (for him) under par in Windsor. How fast was his 350 past the knee??? Correct, it was all over. Jon Turner (with some OL training under his belt) hit a PB, and at least on the vid, looked to be done and dusted past the knee.
Power cleans and clean pulls are the future for you mate. You know it makes sense.

True, I've never failed a deadlift after the first 6" or so. I really think clean pulls are a much better choice than power cleans though - unless you get some serious technique work in you just won't be able to lift enough in a power clean for there to be much transfer IMO.

Andy - I have considered doing clean pulls but I don't want to be rotating more than two assistance exercises otherwise they just won't get enough time to be of any benefit. I think I'll try them in a couple of months preferably when I can sort it out so I'm doing them when I'm under the watchful eye of yourself, Alan or Jeff.

Jonny - Cheers mate! Hopefully you'll be lifting on the same platform one day! Saves travelling to Scotland every time you want to compete.. Wink
