Very cool indeed!

Something I have been thinking about too, particularly the almost haphazard way a lot of UK guys seem to train, compared to the stuff advocated on that website

I'm not sure it is, from what i've seen comparing UK to US forums by and large the UK guys do a lot less crazy s**t than the US guys. Tends to be Squat, Dead, Bench, OHP and events mostly. Some of the US guys do all manner of esoteric s**t.

Like the quote from Capes about being an athlete then getting strong

I would suggest most try and do it the other way around, if they do the athletic bit at all

You don't see much prowler or sled because in USA these are used at an early age for kids who look to excel at power/strength sports.
This is a school thing, the infrastructure is well ingrained for youth sport at school in america. Just look at the gyms, the s&c coaches and the sheer amount of money spent on school sports is amazing.

That is where your next article should follow on from this one imo, show the depth of training thrown at kids in both nations and it will immediately show why there is more structure on that side of the water.

Oh, it's almost like you dismiss Poundstone when mentioning Jenkins above him Tongue

Valid points. You only have to look at some American high school gyms, let alone college gyms, it's ridiculous.

given the comparison in size and depth of talent between the UK and the US do you not think that we stack up pretty well against them in strongman? (and other sports for that matter) does that 'structure' serve them well?

Yep, the gyms are amazing. From a young age kids are given the opportunity to be athletes at a high level, with good coaching and good equipment and places to grow.
Compare that to our primary and secondary schools where sports fields are being sold off, none have any real gym equipment and your lucky if you get a chance to play in your years football or rugby team let alone actually be coached in it properly or have some real s&c time to help you progress.
For kids who want to compete, over here we have local school level which is generally s**t, or your local youth team which isn't much better. Over the pond they have proper federations, recognised well funded setups and a pathway to potential stardom as you move up through your school career.

So when some bloke hits 20 and thinks 'I'm gonna hit the gym' we are lucky if they turn to a competitive version of anything strength related. Over in USA, he would have been set in his mind and had lots of coaching growing up. You can see which is more ready and which is most likely to have an impact.

Worlds apart is only the start of it Wink

In all sports, for our small size of nation and lack of funding in comparison, we stack up amazingly. My comments are not trying to put us down, if anything it shows just how great our top stars are.
They could be better though, from additional competition at national level our top stars would be even better imo. But then that's where more international comps are taking place, giving our guys more top people to compete against Happy

The structure serves them very well, just look at the talent pool at uni level for all major US sports. The uni's are the feeding ground for NFL/NBA etc. it's not like that for us at all Unhappy
