I've started judo at the age of 27 and really enjoying. Started on day a week for a new challenge, now looking at 2/3 days. I guess this is partially armed at Chris Jenkins because he's had success strength wise and with judo but how does anyone that trains for both strength and any martial art structure their week? I llike to squat 3 times a week but think I'll have to look at cutting it back a bit.

Very vague question I know but very new to this so trying to find my feet

I took up bjj again about 5 months ago, I train 3 times a week. And 3 times a week weights, it's not set in stone if I pick up knock I might miss a weights session or if I fancy more of one thing I can adapt my split. I have found grappling really has helped me grip and cardio wise.

I've just started MMA and it has been a big hit on my lifting. I seem weaker and hardly feel like going to the gym Unhappy

I've only been at it a few weeks mind so it's probably just my body getting used to the new activity, just like when you constantly ache when you first start lifting.

You have to drop your lifting volume if you do both unless you're superman.

I think i'll be doing this from now on, something like you suggested in the PM.

A:
Squats upto heavy triple
Bench upto heavy triple
Chins

B:
Deads upto heavy 1-3
Overhead upto heavy triple

Each one once per week, taking about an hour. If i do this straight after work at 4pm-5pm it will be easy to slot in. I only lurk sugden or masturbate between those hours anyway.

I train MMA Tues and Sat, BJJ on Monday, Wrestling on Thursdays and Kickboxing Fridays. Due to this, I only lift two days a week. I do 5/3/1.

Day 1 I do Squats and Bench

Day 2 I do Press with deadlift.

I dont do a lot of accessory work due to overtraining.

Judo is awesome mate, its very tough to train the two if your working full time. I would keep the judo days and weightlifting days apart, unless you have a day off and can get some sleep in between the two. I tried a few different things to help my judo, what I did find is its a lot of muscular endurance so you might have to change your training a lot. Gymnastics will help, i dropped all my assistance exercises when I was competing, just two heavy sessions on squats and deads/cleans/any kind of pulls and another lighter session of pressing, along with dips chins, bodyweight stuff, Uchikomi on the move with my training partner (who weighs 23 stone). Drills with bands and plenty of stretching. Everything thats the norm tends to be thrown out of the window when your training for a sport like judo that requires a lot of technique, despite what everyone else says I think power is king once you have mastered the technique (just my opinion mate). A friend of mine Keith Walters won the British a couple of times, he's now in his 50's. He used to be a bull of a man, very powerful and lift with weights. He would run flat out for 3-4 miles with ankle weights on to the local beach front, before judo training, he did this in the belief he would only use technique in training and not his strength. I would train judo atleast 2-3 times a week for a few months. I found some weeks I felt like I could not get up for work the following morning, but I managed to survive somehow and last it out. Judo gives you a lot of confidence and the mental side of it really toughens you up. Judo players have awesome grips, Neil Adams has incredible grip strength, have a look at him on the FightingFilms web site, his instructional dvd's are worth buying. I have a copy of his old video on VHS in the house, I need to get it copied to youtube, some amazing stuff on there. Boar on here, sent me a s**t load of bjj and judo dvd's, I used one of the chokes on the dvd in my last fight. I would stick to the basic movements, squats I found very useful for bjj lads trying to sweep you when ground fighting, functional strength and mobility is what you need, I find strongman training excellent, on the mat you need to pace yourself or you will get burnt out. The more you blow through your ass in training the better, if you feel your strength going down, take a good few days off. Ronda Rousey has some good drills on her video blog, you can't just go in and throw somebody, you have to set it up. Its good to drill a sweep and throw in another direction. Pick two or three throws you like and drill them like mad, tiatosh is a nice power one or hara goshi.
