I made this thread to discuss passion vs genetics, and whether people consider it worthwhile to put so much into training if they don't think they have 'the gift'. I'm happy with 'life' as a whole.

If it makes you happy then it is worth it.

Investing time and energy in something is not purely about the end result, but whether you enjoy the process.

If you are happy to dedicate yourself to training, and enjoy doing it then it is not by anymeans wrong imo, even if you dont have a gift for it.

Deadlift is one event, anyone can improve their flexibility and cardio if they really want to, but, and please dont take this the wrong way, i get the impression from your log and general comments that your passion is getting strong rather than being a strongman, or that passion would drive you to train the weaknesses. If that is the case, and it make syou happy then keep up the good work, as your strength has come on loads

Fair point, bit you need to plan for later in life as well, being the boring old fart here, but I don't think bouncing is gonna provide for you and your family in your old age (correct me if i'm wrong) but you need summat that can give you that option I think

When you say "provide", are you meaning a nice flash house/car etc?

Materialism (which is just an off shoot of capitalism) domiantes our society....which is pretty s**t IMO

As long as I have money to keep my family food, housed and warm....and enough spare cash to do family/social stuff every now and then, then thats cool with me (and from Sams posts, given he's no family, I think he's cool with having enough cash to train and do whateva he enjoys socially)

The latter JC, the abitlity to ensure you can live comfortably in your old age and not have to worry about fuel bills or the basics etc. Not necessarliy livign a flash life when your old (in fact you prob don't want that).

gifted people dont make it to the top, fanatics do. and being a fanatic means sacrificing things in life. but not everybody makes it to the top by being a fanatic due to circumstances like injury, family, money. life, etc. can you hack spending a large part of your life being a fanatic and failing?

if you arent gifted sam, then who is?

Personally, there isn't such a thing as you either have it or you don't...... if you were severely genetically limited you wouldn't be 140kg, wouldn't have a 800 gym total. (theres alot of inbetweens, kinda like a 1-10 scale! you might not be 10 but you're certiantly not a 1 sam lol)

Obviously not as some genetic disadvantage. From reading your FB etc Sam you are dedicated but sometimes you do just have to take a step back from it all.

have to make sure your social, someetimes people would ask me to go out etc after work and straight away i'd be like, no i'm training! Now i always sack it off and my liftings somewhat improved since doing that.

how can you tell whos genetically gifted when everyones genetically enhanced. the genetically gifted in my opinion dont often get involved in bodybuilding, powerlifting, strongman as the best are on gear and theres no money in them really. the genetically gifted would be more likely to do a sport with money...Confused

"The iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you?re a god or a total bas***d. The iron will always kick you the real deal. The iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But, two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds."
