I used to get them really bad when i played rugby, if i got the physio to massage deep heat or a similar product into my shins for 2 mins it never caused me a bit of trouble for the whole match.

I used to have to do it regularly when I was studying A level PE. I used to try and take bigger strides than if I was running normally, and run off the ball of your foot and toes, its supposed to be a more natural action for the foot.

Buy running shoes, not trainers. You can pick em up cheaply enough from Sports Direct online. I got a pair of Adidas for £30 and my feet ARE GLAD i DID.

Detention officer?

In case the little s**ts run off? Grin The runners will test your deadlift grip when you nab them.

ive been a prison officer for 2 years mate. if you take to it, youll love it.

im no model for fitness, but i passed it easy, just keep in your head its less than 5 minutes of steady jogging, and itll seem less hard. whats the rest of the test like for yours? i had an agility run and grip test aswell.

The right trainers for your feet and correct running style should help you a lot. Shinsplints suck balls.

Shin splints are often connected with over pronating- If you get some good running shoes designed for over pronaters they'll probably help. Asics are (or were when I used to run a lot) my shoe of choice and a lot of them have the duomax support in the instep which helps with the pronation - But most makes have an anti pronation shoe so it's a choice thing and looking aroun dif you want to go that route.

I ended up getting orthotics which were the biz, but for a one off test they're way too expensive imo.

Running on your toes is hard btw - good for sprinting not so good for longer stuff ime unless of course you're a world class distance runner - No idea how those guys do it!

I don't know anything about shin splints so this probably isn't helpful but if you're looking for a new pair of trainers get down to a specialist shop, have them analyse your gait and recommend a couple of shoes. Then go and check online and at places like Sports Direct for the same model or similar (or previous years) and you might save a few quid.

Even if you just buy a new pair without getting it checked they might help with the shin splints because you're supposed to replace them every year or two or after a certain number of miles.
