I am really struggling with my training right now.
Struggling to keep going consistently, keep picking up niggling injuries. I get pissed off with myself if i don't go, but then if i do go i get pissed off because i always feel crap with the training session that i have just done.

Any of you guys ever have this? If so, how do you get over it?

I thought a competition and therefore something to aim for would help me but no.

Any thoughts/idea?

Take a week off, it sounds like you're run down and need a bit rest to repair.

I think the biggest cause of stress is worrying about stuff you can't do anything about. If, for whatever reason, you can't train like you want to do right now then instead of it being a cause of stress why not move the goalposts.

Try to sort out a schedule that you can stick to even if that involves only going to the gym twice a week for example, or if you've been doing splits try full-body stuff. Also switching your goals can help to stuff which seem like more fun. For example if you've had a strong strength focus for so long then perhaps switch that to something more bodybuilder orientated. Or if Benches are causing you problems then switch focus to something else.

Lifting weights is a great thing to do, when you're old and look and move a lot better than your peers you may well think it's the best thing you ever stick with. So it's worth trying to stick with it.

Thanks for the replies.

For me, training and going to the gym was always my time away from everything else. My way to relax while still improving and working towards something.

I have always trained mon-fri first thing in the morning before work and it always used to be great as it would get me up, and awake ready for work. These days getting out of bed, even though i have actually moved closer to the gym, is so much more difficult. I know that just makes me sound really lazy.

I have recurring shoulder problems that the doctors and consultants just put down to nothing, give me some painkillers, a pat on the back and sign off. Each time this happens, i take time off the gym and then get back to it but recently trying to get back into the routine back when i start back training is impossible.

After every 8 weeks or so of good training I seem have 2 or 3 weeks where things just don't go my way. Just push on through and it'll go good again Happy

I went through a bad spell a few months back. I had a few weeks off, and came back with a 8-10 week structured training plan. I'm enjoying it as much as ever now

from my personal experience, i would say change your routine a lot. in situations similar to this in the past i have dont DB bench instead of barbell bench, powercleans or SLDL instead of deadlifts...

im not saying do this im just saying this worked for me

I had a similar case before christmas. I completely changed my routine for 6 weeks and ditched all the low rep heavy stuff and went for more bodybuilding/ crossfit routine. Even doing things like single set 50 reps on pullups and dips etc. After 6 weeks I went back to heavy stuff with a new focus and drive.

I have a competition week today so after that i am going to change my training up a bit and try to get the enjoyment back to get the routine of training back.
