What techniques if any do people employ to keep focused throughout the duration of a comp. I tend to be ok for the first couple of events then pretty much switch off which Isn't ideal. I'd try the iPod thing but that doesn't hold my attention either. Any ideas greatly recieved.

Just try and relax, you don't want to be tense the whole day.

Switch yourself back on before your lifts but in between there's no sense in maintaining any level of concentration, you'll just tire yourself out.

I'm not sure relaxing is the problem, if anything I'm a bit too relaxed.

u do seem to switch off after a couple events buddie u did a bit at st ives.

like us all u put a lot of pressure on yourself and if 1 event early on doesnt go as planned u seem to zone out n lose all agression and effort.

having trained and competed with you its obvious the strength is there and before the comps your allways chatty n having a crack.

if anything try and enjoy the competion element a little more

hope your well n training hard buddie, sure i will see u soon

The only time I recall "switching off" is after I made a total mess of an event that should have been good for me.

This. You'll be a wreck by the end of the day if you try and stay heavily focused throughout. Especially when there can often be lengthy breaks between your lifts.

Having read your next and Gray's post. Often finding some sort of cue that is a mental thing for your head to switch on can help. You would need to ingrain it into your lifting through doing it all the time in training.

We are creatures of habit and our head responds to signals that it recognises. I always use to do the same things before I lift and I had clap that worked as a signal to switch on. Having had breaks from training I lost the habit of doing it, but as I did it before every big lift it worked well to get me 'switched on'.

It might be a function of how you train in the gym as well, if you're constantly psyching up before lifts you'll need that to compete well. With comps being a lot longer than a typical training session, it's no surprise you zone out after a couple events. In training if you just go up to the bar and lift you develop more of an ability to do that over time without all the crazy psyche ups and you'll probably have less chance of zoning out/mentally tiring out.

Might not apply to you but that was my experience in PL.

My mentality is the last 3 are 10x as important as the first lot of events! I tend to not bother about the first bunch !

i just switch off after each event but just before i focus on the movement and just try to get as many, or go as fast as i can.

if i was to do a big lift lig a Log aor squat or deadlift then i listen to one piece of music called `The Gael` get me fired up and ready to rumble.

you just need to find your trigger it being a thought, a peice of music or something. a guy i know use to used the image of a member of his family getting beaten up. and another spoke to himself n such away he convinced himself that he could do the lift.
