Mallone | UK women most obese in Europe men 2nd | 27-11-2011 @ 14:11
Has achieved nothing. Member 1386, 292 posts | Figures also reveal that more young people are obese in Britain than any other country in Europe http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/About/General/201... The Guardian said: Nearly a quarter (23.9%) of British women are obese, according to an EU study which found the proportion was the highest out of 19 countries surveyed. The statistics also showed British men are not far behind, with 22.1% being classed as obese, coming second only to Malta. Weight problems are statistically measured using the body mass index (BMI) of adults, with obesity being defined as a BMI of over 30. What is the Guardian telling us? Do we need to order slim brides from Eastern Europe?

You actually make a good point about BMI and obesity. It doesn't work for people who have any degree of musclemass. I am in the "Morbidly Obese" catagory, but have a lower bodyfat than the person who was taking my measurements. I was in the obese catagory when my bodyfat percentage was in single figures. BMI is rubbish. However, it is clear that this country has too many fat people who do no exercise

I agree, earlier in the year i tore the cartlidge in my knee keg loading. After surgery to tidy it up the surgeon put on my discharge papers, :reason for injury co-morbidity of obesity. So really it must of had nothing to do with the 125kg beer key i was lifting at the time.

normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | davy - you're right, but far too many people think this exception applies to them. Looking at a lot of the stats and journals on this site, it wouldn't be surprising if a fair number of the posters are obese or pushing it, but it not be too much of a problem because they still have respectable bodyfat levels. However, if you ride your bike a couple of miles a week and have a 10kg dumbbell in your bedroom - you're kidding yourself, fatty. I hit 89kg at 170cm, which is just about obese and was squatting some decent numbers at the time. Felt like crap though, 80-82kg with a BMI of about 27 feels right.

Member 2272, 339 posts SQ 102.5, BP 50, DL 140292.5 kgs @ 65kgs UnEq | It's not so much the exception as the rule though; BMI is a statistical measure, designed to be used over populations. For an individual, all it does is compare to the average, so it's hardly surprising people of non-average composition don't fit.

Has achieved nothing. Member 1386, 292 posts | For people who lift and they have muscles then their BMI could categorise them as obese but actual body fat levels could be low. The general population doesn't do any sort of exercise and their body fat levels are way too high. This is the problem. On the other hand you have people who used to lift/be active, then are now retired or are coaches/managers and their weight has ballooned. Look at the waistlines of several premiership managers for example.

Grass fed Member 1147, 7710 posts SQ 220, BP 185, DL 272.5677.5 kgs @ 113kgs UnEq | even though BMI doesn't have any relation to well trained peoples body fat, I'm willing to wager having a high BMI, even if it is mostly muscle, ain't that good for you I'm very aware of this as my bodyweight tends towards 130

jerking is obviously great, Member 2521, 4712 posts SQ 235, BP 160, DL 290685.0 kgs @ 111kgs UnEq | I suppose on the flipside, that there are people (elderly, very thin framed etc) that are actually "healthy" in BMI terms, (due to their low muscle mass) are actually carrying an unhealthy amount of bodyfat
