I'm actually about 13 odd stone. Untrained, I was 9 stone at university. I also have a medical condition that massively bumps up my calorie requirements, I was eating solid food like a loon and downing shakes to hold on to the 14st. What is this medical condition, if you don't mind me asking? I used to have 3 shakes a day, but after reading an article about protein needs by projectgoliath - and the scientific papers he sited - I dropped down to one after training. Haven't noticed and effects to my weight or strength as a result.

Hey mate, my name is Paul Dudley Member 632, 3628 posts SQ 200, BP 155, DL 282.5637.5 kgs @ 77kgs UnEq | f**king hell... its like groundhog day... I personally get in around 1g per lb of bodyweight in protein pet day (~100g in shakes, not just whey though, cottage cheese, milk and eggs also). Is that amount needed? Maybe, maybe not... but it doesn't cost me much and it may well be doing me a lot of favours (with no real negative as far as I can see...). I was up to 300g a day at one point and noticed no change, on the other hand I stopped taking additional supplemental protein and I lost 3kg in a month and felt weaker (this may well be a coincide, but I don't fancy risking it really).

normal people, like me. Member 2325, 550 posts | Post Edited: 13.10.2011 @ 11:36 AM by IainT Cystic fibrosis.I'm about on the same page as you regarding intake now btw, generally around training. It's also something easy for me to digest as a late night meal, so I use it then too. The other use really is when I can't be arsed to make breakfast or don't feel well and can't face solid food. My dietician does not support its use by the way. But then, their advice for putting on weight is to eat more crisps and chocolate between meals. Remember a long time ago reading an article with Louie Simmons in which he poo-poos nutrition, saying that one of his lifters only eats one small meal (grits?) a day. Which is probably an exaggeration, but even so, whatever he was doing was working for him, peraps not optimally though. There are guys who eat rubbish and are probably stronger than me without ever training, but they have nothing to teach me about nutrition and training. There are guys who train hard and are massively stronger than me, who eat like crap. Doesn't work for me, but I can learn about training from them. There are some hurdles in my way, they mean I have to try and do most things right most of the time to progress. So, like the smoking thread of recent weeks, I can learn from people who do better than me but get more stuff 'wrong', I just can't learn from what they do that is wrong for me. Same with vegetarianism (not to draw an equivalency with smoking), if it's something that disadvantages a strength athlete even slightly but is surmountable with effort by some, I won't be amongst them. Decent amount of protein is a good thing, getting it all from food is somewhat more expensive and more hassle, therefore bit of protein powder is no bad thing.

Hill sprints are fun! Member 731, 3253 posts SQ 200, BP 127.5, DL 232.5560.0 kgs @ 80kgs UnEq | I tend not to worry about macronutrients, maybe I should, maybe I shouldn't. I eat 4-5 meals throughout the day, have a protein shake after training on training days and whenever I remember to make one on non-training days. Seems to work alright for me.

I am yet to be convinced that adding protein beyong what is 'enough' does anything more for you beyond add calories to your diet (which in itself might be no bad thing).

I have gained 3 +1/2 stone this year.so protein works for me.

Man up and have a fuckin coffee Member 2086, 9717 posts SQ 340, BP 252.5, DL 300892.5 kgs @ 158kgs UnEq | repair and calories for me , (a)protein replaces damaged muscle fibres , (b)shakes are very high calories......simple. The more you train the more you must eat(to grow) and for those of you without a huge appetite they can add another 'meal' or two or three to your diet . It aint gonna make you look like Poundstone in a week , but i often see little newbies at the gym with a 1 scoop powder filling it with water? ......2 or three scoops and full fat milk will make you grow ......or alternatinvely get a thousand calorie milkskake and shove 2 big scoops in , 3 times a day !!
