Not read this whole thread so I don't know if this has been mentioned - but my understanding (and it may be an urban myth) is that in order to sustain a vegetarian through the harvesting of crops and grains - a significant amount more animals die in the process - think of all the little mice and bunnies killed in the combine harvester and all the little insects killed in pesticides for example.
A large animal bred for meat is the sole mortality and feeds a human for a large amount of time.
I'm all for humane rearing of livestock - free range chickens for example.

Meat is nutritionally and calorificly dense. It rewards the effort of obtaining it, and then some. As a survival strategy, an animal like us that requires a substantial amount of food to support a substantial brain, meat makes a fair bit of sense. Only earlier today I was reading a (probably rather out of date now) book about human origins that posited that one of the possible reasons for a large degree of apparent sexual dimorphism in early modern humans* could be that males hunted and kept meat for themselves, leaving the women to mostly eat plant matter.

If a substantial portion of your daily activity is dedicated purely to feeding yourself, then meat makes tremendous sense. Now, it takes little or no more effort to feed yourself adequately without meat. Adequately though, I'm sure there are outliers, but generally the strong guys out there are eating a fair amount of animal produce.

* - in one place in South Africa, with a very limited sample to compare. For all we know the male was unusually large, the female unusually small. Plus, the book was written in the mid-90s and is probably a historical curiosity now.

Obviously it is possible to live on a vegetarian diet, but is it possible to optimise athletic performance whilst being vegetarian (or is it possibly even better)?

ok i cudda worded my statement better but im s**t with that stuff lol. i never said animal welfare isnt important but its definately not the most important issue to worry about IMO.
also the statement about drinking beer n taking crack is somewhat wrong, i was sayin peoples actions indicate that they wont encourage meat eating, slaughterhouses etc but encourage child slavery (usually without realising). which would be the same as somebody taking crack n saying beer is bad for you, NOT somebody drinking beer n saying crack is bad. unless of course u think animal welfare is more important than child slavery then it was right.

Well, 24 years as a veggie and I am not particularly womanly (at least not overtly)... so I think your friend will be safe for a while.

Where is Joni when you need him anyway!

I've read the arguments for and against... but from personal experience and that of my old friend Kerry Napier who is/was a Pro Bodybuilder (not a veggie but allergic to whey, and many other things) soya isolate is not detrimental to strength training or bodybuilding.

Haven't read it all, I've got Quorn to eat, then work to go back out to, but am I correct in thinking that you consider your friend to be gay for becoming vegetarian and you want to force some meat inside him to cure of him of this affliction?
Confused
I'm trying to do the math here, really.
