I'm pretty sure there is a good financial argument against it.

That and the cancer.

COPD's more common than cancer.

Neat little trick the smoking cessation team at work taught me - get one of those thin drinking straws, put it in your mouth, pinch your nostrils shut and breathe through that tiny straw for 5 minutes. That's what it feels like when you've f**ked your lungs from smoking 10 cigarettes a day for 10+ years.

I made it to 2 minutes before I started to panic from being so short of breath.

dont think smoking small amounts will affect general fitness. i can even see past the smell thing and the money thing. cancer is bad but the thing that bugs me is the 'omg i need a fag or my worlds gonna fall apart' too soft is you ask me. i know not everyone is this hooked but still....wait what was we talking about?

I think half the USSR throwers from the 1980s smoked. There is one GB thrower who considered smoking coz it was the only thing he could see that the USSR throwers were doing that he wasn't.

He never closed the gap between his performance and the USSR...............

However well a sportsman (or woman - Shirley Strong used to have a 20 a day habit and she won Olympic silver in the 100m hurdles) who smokes performs, you can pretty much guarantee that they would perform better if they didn't. Reducing lung efficiency isn't going to help maximise performance. How good could Bobby Charlton have been?

Exactly. It's all good and well looking at great aunty Maureen who smokes 40 a day and is 103 years old but there is not any doubt that people who smoke wouldn't be better if they didn't.

Each to their own but don't be naive and ease your guilt by pretending it doesn't make any difference!
