Was looking at competitions and you see normal, novice and first timers comps

got me wondering obvs in bodybuilding you get pro cards and things but in strongman theres no real definition of any of them

what would you say classes you of:

first timer - obvs never done a comp before and this would be your first

novice -

normal -

pro -

personally i would class it on your stats but that would rely on people being honest and a 300kg deadlifter turning up to a comp with a 200kg dead.

id say

novice- first 12 months of competing and not finishing in top 3 more than a couple of times

intermediate-once you have done a good 12 months at novice or placed on 2-3 comps at novice level

open level- id say 300kg+deadlift 130-140+log 250+squat i think you shoulds not be competing in the lower levels anymore but this is just my views other people will probably have there own ideas

sounds sensible and straightforward... unfortunately without a fed, people continue to enter comps way below their capabilities... everyone knows who they are, and it just makes them look like a laughing stock.... just pathetic in my eyes, either man up and accept you are not as good as you think, or don't compete. lads who've done 20+ comps and have been training for ten years shouldn't still be doing novice comps regardless if they're top three or not.

not that I think a fed is necessary and would probably cause many more arguments and b**ching than already goes on.

thanks for asking, im new to this site, iv been lurkin the forums for about a week now. im also new to the strongman scene and wondered exactly the same thing about classes. basically im from yorkshire n wud when im at a level were i can compete i want to do so in the yorkshire strongman event @ novice u90kg's. as this is the only event i think i would stand a decent go at. however my worry is that there is no gym with strongman equipment anywere near me (im from a small town that lacks alot of things) so i wanted to enter a 1st timer event just to get the feel of things but did not want that to mean i couldnt enter a novice comp later on.
also i think if someones limited to use of equipment it should determine there category, as some of you said 300kg deadlifter is no novice but if hes never used a log to press or lifted a stone except in contests etc they are kind of a novice in a sense

i agree about ppl enterin below their capabilities, better to lose to the best than beat a beginner. that doesnt prove their better if their not beginners. its jus the same as a senior competeing in a juniors event really. altho the intermediate would look rather stupid if they didnt win

its all meaningless until the comps are at the same level, some comps billed as novices have guys doing them who really shouldnt be

one novice comp might have a 160 deadlift and another 220

someone who would be challenged by the events in 1 comp billed as a novice would make the events look silly in another 'novice' comp

I've been competing in strong man for just over a year now, and have boked myself in for a novice competition in september, and that will be my last novice (unless there is a heavy one that comes up), i've never come top three yet, always bettered by others, but i think its unfair on up and coming competitors for me to continue in the novices, as my lifts are progressing very well and i feel the only way that i can keep progressing is to keep trying to beat bigger and stronger guys.

Yeah good replies there... because ive been training just over a year and have only done 3 comps in the past a first timers, and englands strongest junior qualifier and final so i never really knew were i should be as i dont want to enter a novice if im not classed as one

Where do they go then? If they are not good enough to place in novice they will get pissed on at inter or open. Are you saying that after this point they cant compete?

Surely it has to be based on weighs you can lift and comp placings not number of comps.

I placed top 3 in a couple of novices, so followed what is generally said, and didn't do any more and went to the Scottish instead. If I had never done well at novice I would have stayed in novice comps till i was strong enough, or realised I never would be and given up.

this was the path i took
Shetland comp last
Shetland comp 1st - fife 3rd
shetland comp 1st - Scottish Quals 13th
Shetland comp 1st - Fraerbrough 2nd
Scotish quals 4th - Scottish Final 5th
SSM2 i think i was 12th or 13th and i was still injured

so the shetland comp i would say is a novice to intermediate when i done them, the fife was a intermediate as was the fraserbrough and the national level with the scottish comps.

now for next year i will be doing the shetland comp which IMO now is a Intermediate to Open class now due to the rising standard here which is good.

if i was to give anyone advice then it shouldn't be based on the number of comp that a person does but based on there ability and strength levels if they have a steady increase then work your way up from novice to int's then to opens as an example but if your progress is slow and strength levels are not developing as you would hope then stay at the level you are at until your strength levels increase and so you can move up a level.

now this is also dependent on the honesty and people not glory hunting. but with the lack of Fed / rules / and overall guidance on this matter then it has to down to the Comp organizers doing a little research into the people wanting to do there comp, which IME never happens.

as for me i have to look at INTs/Opens with no deadlift Grin
