My right knee has been bothering me for about 18 months now, it started as a slight niggle. It has slowly but surely got worse, and squatting seems to set it off, although getting out of a chair or going up/down the stairs is now enough for it to flare up. And the other day I jumped over a gate and it is now quite painful. There is no visible swelling. I have tried taking aspirin, I take cod liver oil and glucosamine in fairly high doses, but nothing seems to work. Im going to book up a doctors appointment (down here it takes about 2 weeks) but I wondered if anyone here has or has had a similar experience, and if so what did you/ do you do to remedy it? Im panicking as I have the British champs in a few weeks and next week is my heavyiest squat session before the comp. Any suggestions?

I was having a similar problem to you, and I did the jumping over a gate thing as well which f**ked me up proper. Didn't really get it checked up or nothing. I just took 6 months off training and my knees were as good as new again!

Don't think that is what you want to hear though Unhappy

See a good sports physio therapist they will help toidentify where the problem is and you can adjust your training accordingly. One of the problems powerlifters have can be an imbalance of muscle development such as the quads being much stronger than hamstrings or different quad groups being under developed.
A couple of physio sessions is a small cost compared to gym fees or supplements.

Excellent advice and of course you should have done it months ago. Things should be nipped in the bud not left to fester for months, things rarely go right on their own. You are an intelligent and talented man. LEARN FROM THIS

Cheers Icepick and Bryn. Tony, jumping over gates/fences etc has been a habit of mine for years! Sounds stupid I know.

Pete, I know I should have nipped it in the bud long ago. I have made a mistake ignoring it and will learn for the future.

I will bear all this advice in mind, thanks guys Happy
