Lately, ie for around the last 3-4 months, I've been feeling really stiff, sore and tight in my achilles tendons. I've had a few ideas about the cause of it, walking 4-5 miles a day, deadlifting barefoot, starting training cleans more, or even jusst being on the brink of being an old c**t! But I dunno what it is. Anyone else suffered from this? Anyone know how to cure it? If I lie in bed or put my feelt up for half an hour or more I'm hobbling all the way to the fridge/s**tter and they don't loosen up until I'm on my way back and it's beginning to really piss me off now. Cheers for any help! Happy

And a question for Ed Clarke (if you read this): Did you feel anything like this building up prior to rupturing yours or was it just an out of the blue thing?

completely out of the blue for me
my brother had tendonitis in his achillies tendon a couple of years ago which sounds similar ,the physio had him doing lots of pretty intense calf raise type training .

I'd been thinking of calve raises just to stretch them out at the bottom, I forgot to do them today as I haven't done calve raises for over a year. I'm gonna make a point of doing them now, cheers mate!

They are actually affecting my squat form I think, which is why I'm asking. I need to get shoes with a bigger heel i think as I'm lacking flexibility in my ankles since this started.

Try the usual, roll, stretch and some anterior tibialis work, in that order and finish with something like full rom calf raises or cleans.

ive had this my self years ago, it got to a point i couldnt walk, it was due to lack of fluid around the tendon causing friction, thus wearing away at the tendon, they were close to snapping when i went to see a doctor i suggest going to a doctor soon, and rest them not work them for now

i had something similar in my achilles, if i spent much time imobile it would be stiff and first thing im the morning i had no mobility at all for 30-45 mins but i didnt do much about it and my achiile ended thickening to 100% of it orginal size then while running my fitness test at work i ruptchered it by 50%.

i had a lot of physio on it and ended up doing a 3 week rehab course which looked at the resasons for the injury ie poor core poor walking style ect and they found with me my core was crap and they put it down to using my belt too much.

they explained to me with a weak core the gluts and lower back take the brunt of the pressure of normal function, where the gluts were under more pressure they put pressure on the hams and so on down the leg.

they gave me a core program and a flexibly and mobility program which has done wonders but as i had a 50% ruptcher it is taking an age to sort they said had i went to the doc sooner and got a program id would have been sorted ages ago

if i were you mate id work your core a bit more use a belt less if you want the program they gave me i can email it to you if you like

how long did it take between rupturing and you gettting back to full training?

I ruptured mine 8 weeks ago and am being told minimum of 6 months before any sporting activity.

full weight training it took me about 8months from injury to normal training but cardio wise i im still not back to 100% almost 2years on, i cant run more than a mile with out pain and stiffness.

my physio said if it was 100% rupture id had healed faster than the 50% i had

That seems well off.

I ruptured mine as a teenager, had it surgically reattached (because I ruptured the entire tendon and my foot was just dangling loosely), close to 3 months in a cast and then back to jogging 2 weeks after the cast came off and back to sprinting a month later.

interesting I think the fact you were quite young may have speeded things up ,although I'd be extremely happy if i heal up as quick as that.

Thanks for the help guys, plenty of things to try out. Calve raises sound like the thing to do tbh, as I don't use a belt until I get to like 90% max lifts usually or if my lower back is f**ked from whatever i was doing the day before...however strange1 can I get that program please mate?
