Bodyweight+ strict is in itself impressive. As is 85x5 on push press at Shaun's current bodyweight.
However when these numbers can be doubled by simply jumping underneath the weight, you can't deny technique plays a huge part.
Take Zoe Smith, a cute little 16 year old girl who can put more 'overhead' than your average 16 stone gym goer. You can't tell me that's not technique?

Can you move fast enough to accelerate a bar to drop under it ala jerk?

So a discus thrower is super strong because he/she can throw the thing really far? An 8 stone girl who has practiced with one will throw it further than a bodybuilder who has never thrown one before.

if you insist. put it this way, none of the finalists of the last olympics have less than a 180 power clean and 200 bench.

In my mind the beautiful thing about the C&J is that it's the biggest weight you can put overhead. Surely it's the overall best example of a lift that shows your body's' ultimate overall explosive strength in the vertical plane. The amount of muscle used in the lift is staggering and is still the lift used in the selection process for future NFL candidates to my knowledge. Your job in the NFL is to create as large a forward force in any given direction as is possible. This is the beauty of the lift for me. It's a massive test of explosive athleticism and co-ordination.

And I'm also damn sure David Beckham could kick a football further than I can - does that mean he's 'stronger' than me? And Jonny Wilkinson could definitely throw a rugby ball a lot further, does this mean he's superior in terms of upper body strength? Nope, of course not.
Weightlifting is the one of the most technical sports out there, possibly even more so than the examples I mentioned above. This is easy to see when you could hand someone who clean and jerks 220kg a pair of 60kg dumbells on seated shoulders and they wouldn't be able to do a thing with them.
And as for the comments about the 'it's all technique crowd' holding 160kg overhead... I can hold it overhead all day long, after push pressing it up there. Wink
Robert Wilkerson's 495lb strict seated press - 100% 'strength'. A 495lb jerk splitting the legs further apart than the town slag while jumping underneath the weight - mostly technique, considering that a large proportion of people who jerk that kind of weight can't even strict press 300lbs.Tongue

no matter what you say i would t**t you at snatch Wink LOL

I garee with Stetec TBH. You are strong is a very vague statement.....you are strong in certain gym disciplines and not so in others

To put 160 OH you goota have (well, certainly at 80KG) bags of explosive power, strength and technique

I dont think Shaun would ever argue that he has ubber 'strong' shoulders/triceps for a big bench/strict. I would imagien he doesn't give a f**k either

I honestly dont know why you let this s**t bother you Shaun....your A GB lifter FFS. Dont have to justify yourself to anyone...the GB tracksuit you wear says it all!

the word "strength" or "fitness" always relative to what you do. for example, if a swimmer and a runner tried to compare fitness they would each be "fitter" at their own specific events. same with strength. strength or power is measued in different sports or events. so being the "strongest" in one exercise makes you the strongest/the best in that event. i'm guessing that's why the sport of strongman exists, to test overall strength on a range of different events. Much respect to you shaun, your weightlifting numbers are awesome. as for people in the gym that can't respect others numbers in events they don't do, f**k 'em. speed x strength = power.

Good point - Lance Armstrong - without doubt one of the aerobically fitest people on the planet ever, with exceptional leg endurance, "only" managed to finish 856th in the New York marathon.
