I got prices from a supplier, and they weren't all that cheap. After import costs, £350 is not too crazy imo. My guess is they are so niche that they have to charge these sort of prices to make holding stock worthwhile. If they're selling two or three a year, it's not worth it if they're just making £50 each time.

For that price you could get a few 20kg iron plates. Is it just me or do most people think they take the p*ss?

They work on high margins in general, but it's likely down to relatively low volumes of sales. Being 'involved in the industry' now () I'm less critical of them than I used to be.
