Ok, I expect a few humorous answers (and why not, as Barry Norman was want to say) but this is a serious question. Those of you that read one of my posts a while back about promoting and developing the sport will recall that one of my ideas for raising the profile of the sport is to attract well known names into it. The media coverage will increase, the sport will be exposed to a new audience...

I'm thinking specifically of sportsmen/women who have retired from their first sport (rugby players, athletes, fighters, rowers, etc.) and celebrities who are also gym afficionados. People of sufficient calibre for the media to be immediately interested. As an example, someone like Ricky Hatton when he retires. Imagine the coverage we'd get if he took up powerlifting. Does anyone on here know, or know anyone who knows, a sports star or celebrity who might fit the bill and who might be able to be recruited?

I'm happy to make the approach if anyone can steer me in the right direction. Initially, I'm only able to do this within the north west. I've already emailed Daniel Craig's agency. Probably nothing will happen, in which case I've wasted a whole five minutes.

Nothing might come of it, but sure as hell nothing will come of it if no one tries it!

Jonny wilkinson would snap in half if he competed in a powerlifting comp. He is riddled with injuries.

No one specific in mind Carl, but realistically with rugby players we're talking about once they've finished playing. Sheridan would be fantastic, but I reckon he's got a few years playing yet. Some ex sprinters would be good too. Darren Campbell?? Or Louis Walsh, then Girls/Boys Aloud would turn up to support him.Grin

hayden, powerlifting is slightly easier than tackling a 21 stone man €running at 15 mile an hour with the intention of knocking you dow so you cant get back up

niel bak would be a good one, very into his fitness, and a well know figure, not up there with james bond, but who is?

another thing

danel craig turns up, bench presses, and gets out benched by a woman or something, that wouldnt be an attractive proposition to them would it? surely it would be better to get someone who is alrady strong, sheridan maxes on deads every so often, so why not get him to do it in comp, god knows theres enough of them

Or he ends up stood between Jeff and Fred and everyone realises he's actually ugly. Even going back to his Aston Martin he's look a c**t if it was parked next to Freds Bentley.
Best leave Daniel alone. Like the idea though.

Lol at the Handsome Fred stuff! No one calls him that when he's standing next to me and Joe! Probably cos there's only me, him and Joe there! The serious point is not that we get people straight into comps, but that they take up the sport with a view to competing once they have a year or so training behind them. Daniel Craig was just an example to illustrate a point, plus he spent a lot of his formative years in Frodsham, where I live. Also he's 40 in 2008 and would be M1 so it shouldn't be impossible for him to make the M1 qualifying standard with some proper coaching, especially if he gets into it through benching. And if he hits the qualifying mark, I can't think of any British women who would kick his ass. I think Marion G is our best woman bencher atm and she does about 130. Although Fruitie is catching up fast...

This is a similar idea to Superstars which ran a few years back. A greatshow I thought.
I think it could be difficult assembling quality people from the world of entertainment...egos etc.
I fancy you would end up with the usual "Im a celebrity" bunch.Boy George squatting ,Noel Edmonds pulling,
Jordan benching etc etc.
Could work with sports stars ,but you have to say that rugby and field event throwers would probably dominate as few other sports handle really heavy weights as part of their training.

plenty of ex RL pros would be OK at PL i would imagine

the likes of Inga Tuigamala if he still resides in this country, Steve Hampson is still in terrific shape

The thing about rugby players is what is going to make them want to win a medal at an amateur sport when they have already achieved far greater things in their professional careers. Would it even be a challenge? Hell, I'm sure most of them lift weights in trainings that would piss over most regional competitors and it wouldn't take them long to be winning national competitions; a lot of pro rugby players are the cream of the crop when it comes to power sports.

What's a powerlifting medal when you have a world cup winners medal? Most of these guys when finishing will be busy spending extra time with their families or deciding what career path to go down; I doubt pursuing a new sport would be high on the agenda.

Personally I think the whole idea is pie in the sky, I could only see a cut down version of it working where one of the said celebrities attended a competition as a guest lifter to put on more of an exhibition - and then it would probably have to be approached from the angle of raising money for charity to actually get them to do it.

totally agree that the above would definitely have to be the angle

similar to guest posers at a BB comp I suppose

TBH though I think a lot of ex pros would like to have their egos massaged with ppl watching them lift quite impressive weights at an exhibition
