£100, get the dog catchers details and take something of his and make him pay to have it back.

In one-eyed Gordon's Britain - about £150 apiece would be my guess.

The dog catcher didn't take them. he caught and returned them. The dog-catcher is nice we like him, it's one-eyed Gordons corrupt system that is at fault

Tough one this. Both my pups are chipped. Stupid fee or looking round on your own for them in all hours?

Not a clue about the fee though, or the legality. Dogs are legally property. The warden has found and returned your property.

And the answer is... £140. I'm not blaming the dog warden. She was great and only did her job. I was very grateful to get them back David. That doesn't mean I can't be outraged at what the council charges for a service. £70 a dog and I got charged twice.

A couple of interesting issues arise, which I plan to contact the council about.

I feel like a victim of extortion. "Give us £140 or you'll never see you dogs again. And the longer you wait, the more you'll pay" (which was the implicit message if not the specific words from the woman that phoned me) feels like the mafia has taken over the local authority.

What if I hadn't had £140 there and then?

As Thing says, the dogs are my property and were chipped. Does the council have a right to deprive me of property which it knows is mine if I don't pay an on the spot fine, because that's what it really is?

Where is the wit to differentiate between habitual strays that cause a nuisance and a couple of chipped puppies that have never escaped before.

Not saying I'm not grateful to have them back; not saying I shouldn't have to pay something for the ssrvice that returned them; just criticising the cost and the "pay us or you won't get your dogs back" approach.

This might be a local papers job if I don't at least get £70 back because charging twice for one job is outrageous. Watch this space!

Andy, I hadn't a clue what to do on the looking for them front. I had a brief look nearby. Do I wait for them to find their way back? Or do I look for them (where?!), they come back to a locked house when I'm looking and then run off again?

One of mine got out and disappeared years ago (she isnt with us anylonger). She was missing over a week. Police, petsearch, all the agencies in the phone book(pre internet), newsagents window ads, the works. I'd finish work and cycle round the estate till way gone dark. Life was f**ked (if you aint a dog person you wont understand this). Eventually I found a bloke walking her. He'd just found her, liked her and taken her in. Not reported it or anything. Only the reliefe of finding her alive and well saved the bloke from a good hiding. Although skint at the time £70 would have been a small price to pay to avoid going through that.
By all means have a moan about the £££'s. I'll even help you (robbing t**tS) Wink Then checkout the little fella's, or filles and smile to yourself that I could of been a lot less desirable conclusion.

ps you think that was motivational? I tried
Confused

You're right Andy. The overwhelming emotion is relief! Just checked out the "charging scheme" and the cost goes up £10 per day per dog.

Part of my point is the "charge" bears no relationship to the actual costs incurred. So if we accept £140 because the relief should override anything else, why not £240, or £420? Or £1000? The principal remains the same. I actually would have paid £1000 if they'd been dognapped, but that doesn't excuse a council from basically operating a stealth tax.

same thing happened to me about a year back

dog got out when panels blew down in back yard whilst I was at work. Returned home to empty house and yard, no dog!!! looked for the dog for several hrs, quite distressed and then phoned my insurance (the dog had an ID No. form insurance on colar). They infomed me that st helens council had her put in to a cats and dogs home.

was instructed to go to the council, pay them and then get the dog from the dogs home.

Cost to me - £90, plus £40 for getting her btreated for the kennel cough she picked up whilst in the dogs home

was pretty pissed off at the cost, but overall jsut very grateful to have my dog back!!

In France our cat went missing - she was picked up by the firebragade, taken to a cat shelter 4hours drive away and we were tracked down from her tattoo - we didnt have to pay a penny apart from any donation we wanted to make to the cat shelter that housed her for the 52hours it took to track her owners down....

I think charging is unacceptable in principle. What if you couldn't pay? Even worse is increasing payments, what a mounts to a fine, when you don't pay straight away.

I would be overwhelmingly relived that my dogs were safe. Then very, very, angry they where being held to randsom.

That absolutely sums up my feelings, Iain, only rather more concisely!

Correct. The fact is it's another example of "we're in a position to be screwed, and we WILL be screwed"

What pisses me off is some scrote who didnt have the dog chipped and didnt give a s**t about them anyway would walk away without paying anything. Because you care, you pay.
