my dad injured his back rowing a few days ago and has been diagnosed by his gp with a torn muscle. I always thought torn muscles brought up bruising but hes not had any. anyone know if its possible to tear a muscle with no bruising?

who knows where the blood has gone eh.

and also, if the tear is small there would be very little blood.

where is the tear? Deep?

When I tore my calf there wasn't any bruising, just tenderness. As Joni says it depends where the blood drains too and how bad of a tear it is.

if its deep tissue like the miltfidus then i would imagine that there would be very little bruising showing

oh right. its lower back and to the left. he's had problems in that area in the past so I wondered if it might just be a bad strain as there was no bruising.

Yes. Even a fairly significant tear can cause a haematoma within the muscle which does not cause skin discoloration.

A muscle tear is more properly described as a muscle strain, which means the fibers of a muscle in the body have been overstretched, resulting in a severe injury. In the more acute cases, this strain may give rise to a rupture of the capillaries and bleeding in the muscle.

Yet he still makes a 'diagnosis'? f**king worthless c**t. I could do that for 100k+ per year.

Oh knock it off, the vast majority of GPs don't earn that much (£60k is the usual going rate before target-related pay comes in).

Sports medicine isn't on medical school curriculums because it's a relatively new speciality and doesn't really warrant space when compared to the other stuff doctors need to know. I had to take a year out from medical school to do a BSc in sports medicine because there was no other way I could do it - there is literally nothing in the course even close to it.
