As the title says, which would folk prefer? I'll be stocking them soonish, but my quest to get a 28mm bar, weighing 20kg, and rated to 700lbs, has hit a brick wall. I know there are retailers who list them as 20kg, but my guess is that they're the 18.26kg ones, and they just think they're close enough to call them 20kg. I could be wrong though.

500lbs is a pretty 'low' rating, and I'm sure this would put some folk off at least. Appreciate any opinions.

Hello Brain,

I'm assuming that this is as a cheaper alternative to a Texas Power Bar, as they are 28mm and rated far higher than 700lbs (not that the rating means much anyway...)?

Lol! It's not my style, I'm not the type of guy like Pompy who lies to his wife about the weight of the bar she's using! Grin

Cheers for opinion Tony.

Macca - aye, a budget bar basically, selling for about £65 or so.

I'd go for the 700 pound option. You could sell them in a package with two half kilo plates and I'm sure people wouldn't begrudge you 400g

It's better to use clips that are 1kg each, but they're not common, if available at all. I hate using anything that's not an even weight though. Maybe it's just me, I'm not sure. Overthinking?

If a bar is marked or advertised as 20kg, shouldn't it always be 20kg (at least in the EU)?

Im my opinion if your buying a cheaper bar thats what your getting, I have cheap plates and I am sure they dont all weigh the perfect weight, but at the end of the day the weight on the bar is the weight on the bar, its not going to affect me when I get to comp day. I would be interested in a cheaper bar if I wasnt going to buy the texas bar soon. I honestly wouldnt care if the bar weighed 18.46kg or whatever, it would be nice to know that that is what it weighs but wouldn't bother me in general. If I was a powerlifter whos always looking to increase weights by like 1 - 2 kg then it would annoy me but im not so it doesn't

Can anyone clarify? Are you saying some bars marked as 20kg are actually sold weighing only 18.26kg? Wouldn't you have the council weights and measures people all over you or is it trading standards?

Certainly pubs get into trouble for giving people less than a pint.

if it says its 20kg, and isnt, then yes

but most cheap bar companies sell bars without stating the acctual weight

I've said too much already. This goes so deep, it's likely I'll get 'rubbed out' but I am glad the truth has been told.

No, I'm just speculating, mainly. I think it would only be a trading standards issue if it was reported though. How many folk have plates that are 1kg+ out, and how many of them have reported the retailer to trading standards? None probably.

I put the pressure on the factory to somehow make bars that are 28mm thick, rated to 700lbs, and weigh 20kg. The dream lives on.

Tell you what, it was weird a while ago when I tried to google for a 6ft bar and couldn't find the weight of the damn things stated anywhere. Some of them had "Olympic bar" but did not even state whether the thing was 7 foot or 6 foot. Very weird I thought at the time, but now I see why.
