Hello friends,

My brother who is an avid weightlifter has just been told he has an underactive thyroid by the doctor?Anyone got any advice regarding this?I know he is really upset about this as he has been a fitness freak for years and doesnt normally have anything wrong with him on general check ups.

Not a doc and not experienced or know anybody who has had this but does it basically decrease metabolism greatly and make it somehow really easy to gain weight and mostly fat?

I would say though to him to really not try and let it get to him too much. If he is already really active he can just continue right?

I can imagine it being mentally destructive in that he may become depressed about it perhaps and then as a result of being upset about it he may go downhill and then not exercise etc.

I would have thought the best person for advice for him would be the Dr or if necessary a specialist.

Hope he gets any help that he needs.

I'm pretty sure that there are quite effective drugs for people with both over and under active thyroid problems so im sure the specialist will be able to help.

my girlfriend has an underactive thyroid. only advice she has is common sense really. take the meds regular, try to never miss a day. make sure that he gets to all blood tests so the levels are kept under a close watch

Synthetic thyroxin is/was the prescribed drug to treat this, however it can work according to a similar negative feedback system as taking say testosterone derivative,so continued unobserved over use would in time lead to further decrease in normal level. He will need a progressive up to date doctor that will know how to cycle the drug and monitor its effects.
