Monday, 2nd November, 18.15

Squat, raw, all weights in kilos, no suit, no belt, no wraps.

barx3 - right knee hurting
barx3 - right knee hurting
60x3 - right knee hurting
60x3 - right knee hurting
60x3 - right knee hurting
120x3 - right knee hurting
140x3 - right knee hurting
170x1 - Right Knee giving me serious gip!

Pissed off and genuinely concerned regarding my future as a competitive lifter! My knee is knackered!

Work sets

180x3 - Pretty good
200x1 - Smooth
220x1 - Slow

Box Squats
100x3 - nice
140x3 - nice
140x3 - nice

Out of time, left the gym at 7.15.

The right knee needs serious attention. This is the third week in a row that I've whined on about it. Basically I'm squatting on one leg which has got to be a disadvantage come competition time!

Wednesday, 4th November, start 17:00 all weights in kilos

Bench, raw, working in with Dax & Little Mike

60x3
60x3
60x3
100x5
120x3
142.5x3- added wrist wraps

Time to fry the tri's with a 4 board.

160x5 - in the groove
160x5 - hitting the spot
180x2 - Not bad
160x5 - spot on
160x5 - Sweet

As well as my own training I had to keep an eye on my crazed sons (Little Sadsy as an older brother) who seem to think that they'll be out benching me by Christmas. Trying to keep them in check will be quite a feat as they seem to have inherited the lunacy gene from there mother lol.

Out the gym at 18.30 and straight to the chippy - Tidy!

45 degree leg Press, raw, all weights in kilos, no suit, no belt, or wraps.

No training partners, gym full of roiders, most of them still in there teen's! What a state off affair! How about paying your dues under some heavy iron first boys? What is the world coming to?

Warm up
220x10
260x5
300x5
340x5
380x5
420x5
460x5

Work sets
520x5
520x5
600x1
340x20

That last set for 20 deep reps was dammed hard work but I think I made my point. f**king roiders I'm twice your age and still pissing all over you!

Out of the gym at 18.45hrs.

Very impressive stuff on the leg press, serious weight ! I bet you got more than a fleeting glance from your 'roider' friends !! Hope the knee holds out for you...

Thanks Wes, I appreciate your comments. My Knee requires careful management but it's surprising what you can do when you apply yourself and set realistic goals.

Wednesday, 11th November, 18.30-19.45

Decline bench press , raw, all weights in kilos

20 x 20
60 x 5
100 x 5
120 x 3

wrist wraps on

140 x 5 paused
140 x 5 paused
140 x 5 paused
140 x 5 paused
140 x 5 paused

(Good spotting Little Sadsy)

Lockouts/pin press (about 3 to 4" range of movement)

140 x 5
180 x 3
200 x 3 Bloody hard work
200 x 3
210 x 1 Puny wrists screaming

I must admit I am in awe of the big benchers. I was amazed by my good friend Rob Thomas who tried 280 on the weekend and only just failed by a gnats cock to lock it out. At the moment 200kg feels like it will crush me. I must get better ASAP lol.

Agreed with you on how rampant use of substances appears to be in some gyms amongst the young and/or inexperienced. The product of a culture of instant gratification? Who knows.

You seem to like your declines. I'm interested to know why, as I desperately hate flat bench and am looking for any excuse to do an alternative.

Hi James,

In my opinion sooner or later raw benching will destroy the old rotator cuff and f**k up your benching and competitive aspirations. I've used the decline press to maintain my upper body strength while allowing my shoulder to rehab. Its a involves a shorter range of motion that doesn't place anywhere near as much stress on the rotators and also enables you to really blast your triceps. Nowadays I only use the bench to warm up prior to board pressing. Board pressing & the resultant triceps strength seem to be the key to benching big in a shirt which is what I'm trying to do.

Went to the gym with every intention to train but just wasn't up to it. To many hours spent in work lately so I will return tomorrow night and try again.

I put my little 'un through his paces though. He's only twelve but he's mad keen and really seems to enjoy the training.
