Came on the site after meeting joni (top man!) at severn valley novice strongman comp. Seems like theres some good advice and banter to be had here so I thought id double up my SDF log here. I see there are a few familiar names around.

Ive competed in two novice strongman comps this year and to be honest I got my arse handed to me in both. Learned loads and had a laugh so it was worth it though. Ive got myself some kit now so hopefully ill be more prepared for next season. Cant believe I used to keep myself amused with a barbell and plates when there are so many more wierd and wonderful things to lift! Anyway, down to business!

Training today:

Yoke:

160kg 13m+13m
160kg 13m+13m+13m+13m
200kg 13m+13m
240kg 13m+13m+13m PB
160kg 13m+13m+13m+9m - speed work

Farmers (10m course):

50kg x 20m
70kg x 20m
50kg x 20m

Had my cousin Frankie training with me today. First time hed had a go on any SM kit. At 66kg BW he managed a 200kg yoke for 26m with a drop to turn which I thought was pretty good as he only does strength training for judo.

Yoke PB felt comfortable. Probably could have gone further but I didnt want to push it too much. Only went light on farmers as my shoulders still giving me gyp.

Got some vids of the yoke:

Yes! Another strongman log Grin Maybe we wont feel so lonely here soon Cool

Good to see you starting a log here mate. Do you have a comp to train for at the moment? Or is it just off season stuff now till next year?

Whats the general plan?

Yoke looked solid man (note to self: need to get more yoke training in).

Hey joni. The original plan was to compete as much as possible this year but injuries have conspired against me. Im just trying to get as much event training in now and get myself fit and ready for next season!

Im loving the yoke training theres nothing quite like it!

Alright dan, put your head through!

Thanks Rick!

Todays training:

Log clean+press:

65kg 2 x 3
75kg 2 x 3
85kg x 2
80kg x 2
80kg in 60secs x 7 PB by 3reps

Log press (1st rep cleaned):

60kg x 8
70kg x 6
80kg 2 x 6
80kg x 5 - didnt attempt a 6th, shoulders were done.

Log rows:

100kg x 4
110kg 4 x 6

Nice session. Still not happy with my technique from the chest but im getting there slowly. I dont seem to be able to make the most of my leg drive. Just need to get lots of reps on the board and hopefully ill feel a bit more comfortable with it.

Got a vid of the 80kg x 7 reps in 60secs:

at the first timers comp in march i got 6 reps with 80kg log in 75 secs, so you have easily past that now Grin I like the one motion stuff man, but you wont get much of a leg drive to it that way? Or is the weight so light pressing is never going to be a problem?

Whats your log pb at the mo?

The presses look strict but theres alot of drive coming from the clean. If I get the clean right I get at as much drive as I would from using my legs! Its alot easier to do with lighter weights so its better for reps than for heavy work. Although I have lifted 100kg with this technique its a bit hit and miss so I think im going to stick to a more traditional technique for 1 rep maxes.

My max log is only 100kg but I think I could probably do a bit more now my technique is a bit better.

Give it a try mate. I was surprised at how well it worked! Just make sure you explode back when the log gets to about knee height. Then bounce it off your chest before going into the press.

Grip:

2" Axle double overhand deadlift (10sec hold on each rep, 20secs between reps):

60kg x 5
80kg x 5
100kg x 5

Rolling Thunder (L+R):

40kg x 3
50kg x 2
55kg x 1 PB
60kg x FAIL - so, so s**t at this.

i cant mate, my cleans SUCK! In log press the hardest bit is the clean, the press usually goes better Wink

Good to see a log here, and the vids too Will. Looks like a good set up you've got! Yoke looks solid, comfy with 240 which is good going. Only thing I'd suggest is keeping your steps a bit closer together, like narrower, to reduce the swing. I think it's not a huge issue when the weight is 'walk in the park', but when it gets balls out heavy it should help you go a bit further. Watch those slabs tho! Tongue
Log looked easy too. Nice one.

Thanks for your comments lads.

buzz - looking back at the vid I am going side to side quite a bit. Funny thing is I was giving my cousin that same bit of advice whilst completely not not it myself! Will make some adjustments next week.

Joni - I think that technique does suit those 'of shorter stature'. Youve got to pull the log alot higher than me! Actually thinking about it maybe if I tried a semi sumo stance it might make it easier to clean due to the shorter distance. Ill perhaps give that a try next week.

Training today:

22cm Box squat (belt):

120kg x 1
140kg x 1
150kg x 1
160kg 4 x 1

40cm Box squat (belt):

140kg 3 x 3

Good mornings (from a dead stop at the bottom position):

90kg x 3
100kg x 3
110kg x 3

Pretty good session. Squats are starting to get a bit harder. Dont know if ill hit 190kg again in this training cycle. 180kg is the minimum requirement.
