However, we want less reliance on the state. Therefore...I am converting part of my garden for growing enough veg for my family. We have a few fruit tress and hope to build more, This year I have the goal of converting about half the garden into food production including getting some chickens for eggs, a green house and poly tunnels, raised veg beds (building this christmass I have 1000 bricks ready to lay). Anyone keen to share knowledge? I am a builder btw and can help with advise on common building knowledge. Moreover, any stomach for a money saving/ growing your own food and preping type thread? | ||

Im concreting tomorrow...the mix is 6 - 9 parts balast to 1 part cement. for the brick vegetable raisers I have already put in about 4 inches type 1 to save cost...I will be screeding over with about 3 inches concrete...forget the manuals and online advise they will tell you to dig down to Chyna for 3 courses of brickwork, thats overkill. | ||

I would say that English soil is more than fertile enough to grow plenty without any amendments. I got a new Facebook account so I'll have to add you on there. I'm looking to start planting in England now so would be great to compare notes/successes/failures. For chickens, get 3-5 month old Lohmann Browns. Don't get ones that already lay as they might be 5 years old and at the end of their life. Potatoes are a filler food, but they do take up a fair bit of room. Leeks and garlic take AGES, leeks are about 180 days and garlic you're looking at 240ish days from planting to harvest. Onion sets are much quicker than seeds. Be great to meet up and help you out if you want. Edit - i'm pruning a ton of fig trees if you want me to save you some cuttings. They root pretty easily and give a lot of fruit every year around September. | ||

With the past 2 years I wouldnt bet against it coming over here...the more prepared the better in my opinion. I bought some seeds today, and will put some aside for myself. Will happily send the rest over to you. I found that Premier Seeds Direct has a LOT more seeds per packet, for near enough the same price. I might try germinating stuff indoors for now until 2nd week of Feb, just to get a head-start. Gonna collect some yoghurt pots to germinate indoors on a windowsill. Need the days to get longer too as it's dark waaaay too early now. | ||

Gonna build a second log store closer to the house with them. Will save 300-500 quid and should be able to store another 3-5m2 of logs...Ideal before the fuel bills go through the roof. | ||

The price of wood has skyrocketed and it will all come in useful at some point and Ive tonnes of storage for it...Funky_monkey said: Wise plan! Oh, and Ive got topsoil and stones coming this weekend for the vegatable bed/ barrow path. also a couple of yards of ballast so I can build stepping stones through the garden to save getting muddy. (I have found a round template to build them with(miles cheaper than slabs), couple every weekend...no big rush. Next big job will be reclaiming the far part of the garden and turning it into some sort of orchid. I feel a sense of urgency to get my garden into production...but meanwhile am filling up the metal food/ toiletries store shed we built last weekend. Its very satisfying to have a prep plan in these uncertain times. | ||

Great content though. His lifestyle is one that I'm looking to emulate - few chickens, quails, and a garden producing all your own stuff. I honestly think it's the way forward. I have 11 years of Cypriot pension to pay until I am eligible to receive full state pension, and I'm starting a new job in London tomorrow, but it's a bit of "will i live long enough to enjoy my uk pension?". TBH I'm just here to earn some money for 4 years or so to allow me to be able to plant a bunch of stuff and not worry if it doesn't happen. I would rather spend £3 on a chicken that I know is free range over £3 for one that's full of s**te. | ||

403 forbidden message Member 160, 5121 posts SQ 190, BP 137.5, DL 225552.5 kgs @ 86kgs UnEq | I wanted to get some seed cell trays, and they were £2.30 for 84 cells, and £6 on the train there and back, but it's a nice place out in Crews Hill, so a change of scenery. £8.30 total and half a day out. Found some on ebay. 180 cells in total for £6.41 and I don't have to leave my own home! Only issue is that estimated delivery is 7th-8th Feb, and I want to get my leggy plants into somewhat deeper soil asap. One lil pak choi has fallen over and I don't want to disturb his roots even more! My lettuces have all germinated, and are 3-4cm tall in about 4-5 days. Want to get them potted before they get 3-4 of their true leaves, and time's running out. | ||

I do have a base 10x10 fr when I get round to building a greenhouse...I think I could build one from scratch but will need to get round to multiple other jobs first. I have been allowed to take wood from site...had 25 x 2400 x 47 x50 I managed to fit in my little car...well happy - will build frames over my brick beds for netting in the summer and maybe pollytunnel or hessien in the winter. Also, have decided to put 2 pallets together to create 2 1x1m boxes with the bottom left open and the front side open which I will cut scaffold bords down to make easy access for... compost ,making! should yeild 2m2 every 6 or so months. Also, the inlaws bought me a walnut tree for my birthday and will be planting it this weekend. The main thing this weekend is to step back, look at what we have done so far and work out the best place to site the compost and where to build a frame (hence the wood from work and will use scaffolding at the corners set in concrete...) to net for fruit bushes which we plan to get in place very soon. Poultry is on the list but not just yet. Oh, and we have old rites in out deeds...we can have livestock and, of all things odd, a market 12 times a year! Not that we would... Very exciting.
