Thanks Pete!

Right I will log from Englands and catch up fully until now, makes sense that way.

Englands Strongest Man 2021 29.8.21

So, a funny one this one. First of all really good to have a 1000+ plus crowd rather than being in a gym like last year, fantastic atmosphere as always at Donny dome even with it being a small venue, really like it there.

The weird part being that I went in expecting to win very easily and my target was to win after 4 events, everyone competing also expected me to win very easily and I even got called a trophy hunter Tongue which made me laugh, I told them all I wish I had bigger comps available to me!

So, onto the comp. Didn't want to deload for this one but did have a Thursday off instead of training events so felt really fresh for it and excited to see where I was at.

Event 1: Anvil carry 45kg a hand 40m, no drops allowed
Similar to the UKs medley but one anvil in each hand and 40m instead of 20m so harder on the grip. I thought a lot would finish and a few guys would be very fast, first 8 guys went out and only Dean Evans finished in 24 ish seconds. I was surprised but thought the last heat would be better. Picked em up and they felt very light, got on my skates and by the time I turned around to come back the others had dropped, ran back down the course for an easy win, I think 13/14 seconds so a good 10 seconds clear. Obviously a perfect event for me on paper anyway but glad that my grip is now so far in front of guys at that level.

Event 2: 140kg log for reps
Nice and standard fare of course, Glenns logs are never easy so I expected scores to be down a little lower than guys would be expecting. Ben Williams went out and hit 7 for the lead so that was the target, had a little balance issue at first but startd churning the reps out and paced myself to make sure I hit 7. Ran out of time for the 8th but felt strong and fit enough for it which bodes well. Joint 1st and really happy as I was weighing a very light for me 126kg vs Ben coming in heavy for him at 148kg so a very good sign to match him pressing wise.

Event 3: Max deadlift
Was looking forward to this one but didn't go so well!
305 and 325 moved well but on 350 I had to hitch a little which threw me off balance and the whip of the bar sent me forward, dropping it. Regrouped and pulled it but essentially doing a double made me worry about 375kg next. Lot's of guys managed 375 so really had to get it, came off the floor fairly well but died below the knee and I couldn't lock it out. Joint 6th place so it put me down to only a 2 point lead. Really annoyed at the time but looking back I'm actually fairly happy with my strength, was the 3rd deadlift session of the week and if I didn't mess up the 1st 350 I'm pretty sure 375 would have got up with no dramas so my pull is improving nicely, just a technical error rather than a strength one.

Event 4: Tire flip 350kg 20m
At this point I needed to win and put a marker down after the poor deadlift, the tires seemed quite easy but even though they were lighter they were a bit more awkward than Glenns usual 400kg ones which surprised me and everyone else. Lot's of guys were struggling and only a few completed the course, I went out and got a pretty good rhythm going, no mistakes and finished in 44 ish seconds, took the win by about 10 seconds I think so my first tire flip win in comp and a good confidence boost.

Event 5: Stones 100-160
Glenn put the light run in to my protests but he got it right with the standard of the field to be fair to him. I was suddenly 10 points clear after tire as it really shook things up, Ryan Oldfield blitzed the stones in 22/23 seconds so that was the target. I one motioned the first three but messed up the one motion on the 145kg so lapped and loaded then lapped and loaded the 160kg pretty comfortably, Glenns stones are much bigger than usual for anyone wondering why the light weights. Finished in 26/27 seconds so Ryan would have still got me with a clean run but a comfy 2nd place without being super pysched up wasn't a bad finish.

Overall 1st place by 11.5 points, generally happy with my strength and fitness levels but the mess up on deadlift cost me my goal of not having to do the last event. Either way a good comp and a good run out before Britains and my third Englands Strongest Man title. The standard was a bit below me but weights were high enough to get a good analysis of where I'm at. Sorry if I come across as arrogant on this, the journal is for my honest thoughts and breakdown, I don't filter it like on social media!

What was the winning deadlift at ESM and have you matched it in training? "The Hunter" has a certain Robinhood-Gladiators-esque strongman charm: ) Better than the Beast anyway. Any videos up of the competition?

400kg won then 4 guys pulled 375kg, my max in the gym is 380kg. Yeah I like that, good shout! Yes, if you go on Ultimate Strongman Facebook they have the events on individually, makes it easier than a 4 hour live stream
