Monday, 26th April, start 16:00

Day one of the holiday.

Squat, sleeves and boots on
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
belt on
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110 x 5
120 x 5
130 x 5
135 x 5
Last Monday I worked up to 140 x 5 so the intention tonight was to do 140 x 5 followed by 145 x 5. Everything felt heavy tonight and it became apparent quite early that would not happen. Plan B was to do 135 x 5 and then 140 x 5 but this 135 drained me and I decided that it would be wiser to stop right there rather than plough on.

I had a very similar evening when I got there. Got to what should have been my second from top work set and it was just obviously going no further afterwards. Abandoned ship rather than risk hurting myself.

A very painful physio session tonight. The shoulder is an inpingement problem. Ditch bench press, add seated rows, horizontal shrugs and rear raises and all should be gas and gaiters

Rick said:Until a few years ago, all I knew about Warren Zevon was that Carl Hiaasen liked him, and of course Werewolves of London. You gave me my first Zevon album, way out of my usual zone, and I have come to love it - indeed, I gigged this song with my last band.

65 today, eh. I left you a message in the outro. Happy birthday, my friend.

Brilliant, it helps that I love that song. I think these deserve a thread of their own.

How long does it take you to put one together?

I wonder what the average age of Sugden users is?

Thanks, man. I would feel kind of bad if it was just a thread of me showing off, though. The "what's for tea" thread turned into that for a while and it made me uncomfortable.

Now that I sort of know what I'm doing with the video stuff (which took me a long time to figure out, because - of course, knowing me - I'm doing it weirdly) - it really depends on how tough the song is. This one was tough because I haven't played piano in years, and I was learning it (or rather, busking it) specially. I'm so out of practice I had to stop a few times because my forearms were cramping up... I could do it a lot faster if I wasn't trying to get complete takes, for video. I might start being less precious and drop in a bit more.

On this one, piano took me about three hours to get right, ridiculously; drums about twenty minutes or so (though I completely forgot about the stops in the outro, and didn't realise until I was referencing my mix against his), guitars pretty much straight down. Bass was probably half an hour. Vocal was - I think - first time. I used to gig this on guitar and vocal, so although I was learning most of the guitar parts for the first time it was pretty easy.

Mix takes me a couple of hours, doing the fades in and out for the video and building the mosaic is getting pretty quick. Probably a day total, spread over a couple of days.

Some take longer. I knew Poison pretty well already, but it still took a while. Mostly doing all those vocals, some of which were pretty tough (either very high or very rough, or weird enough that they took me a while to figure out and learn), so I had to do a lot of resting. And I kept screwing the bass up, for some reason. Obviously on something like that the mix takes a bit longer too.

There are a few I should be able to do very quickly - ones that are fundamentally straightforward, and that I gigged for a long time - but I don't want to do those all at once! I hope to keep doing these for a long time.

I'm getting quicker. And it's a lot of fun. But as more of "normal life" comes back, it's going to get longer and longer between tunes, except in school holidays.

I have no idea about the average age, but the kidddzzzz don't do forums, I reckon. I'm 45, for a few more weeks.

Rick, do you have sheet music/tabs for any of the parts, or do you do everything by ear? Your post hints at the latter, which is slightly mind-blowing. I thought I had a decent ear, but note-for-note, full-band renditions are another level.

I do most of it by ear. Sometimes i look at internet tabs, YouTube lessons, etc, but they tend to be (in my opinion) more wrong than right. It’s not note for note, though, just close enough to make you think so Wink.

That said, there are a few things I’ve learned I’ve been playing wrong for literally decades... not any of the ones so far, but some I’ve thought about doing!

It's fine. It makes a change to have something interesting in here. Best I have to offer is that curry and garlic bread followed by a lengthy period of mask-wearing is not the best of ideas :-)

I didn't see your grub as "showing off" you just put a lot of effort into something you are passionate about.

Gentle readers with long memories will recall that Sunday was the day that Joe the Terrible and I used to train, dine, and go home. Sometimes, shifts willing Glynn and Turner would be there and the lovely Tess used to be a regular Sunday attendee. This week only Joe was missing. Tess and discovered open air eating options for next week and I did some remedial nonsense for the shoulder.

As there was only powerlifters in attendence today, and it is spring, the lights were left off. Turner and Glynne happily squatted in natural light. After the squats came the deadlifts and Turner decided that it was too dark to deadlift and so switched the lights on.

The baffled, three of us, shook our heads and allowed him to crack on. It was the simplest thing to do and I don't regret it.

I am accustomed to utter foolishness talked about those lights, but the day that it was bright enough to squat to too dim to deadlift has rather raised the bar higher than I would ever have wished for.
