I all, just moving home and the previous owners selfishly turned the basement into a self contained flat.

Naturally, I'm undoing this f**kery and pulling it all out to build a gym. Floor dimensions are only a smidge under 5m x 5m...

Does anyone have any recommendations on a full flooring solution that isn't going to bankrupt me? Best solution I've found so far is about 850; 30mm thick rubber squares similar looking to what is used in the deadlift frames that people populate with 6 of these 1x1m mats.

Thanks for recommendations...

Oh, and if anyone is looking for a full kitchen (cupboards, units, sink, cooker...) , they are more than welcome to come have a look and make an offer; i'd be happy to let someone come take it all out for free if they painted/patched the wall afterwards!

Stable mats. Sometimes they are on sale on Farm and Equestrian sites.

I'd personally turn the whole floor into a platform of sorts. 2 layers of plywood and a layer of stall mats. 5m x 5m will cost you around 600 for the plywood and 300ish for the mats and would be bombproof. Or if its just you using it and it's not going to get absolutely battered go 1 layer of plywood and cut the wood cost in half.

Nice idea. Where you looking for the stable mats mate? Closest I can find to cover 5x5 is about 750 in just the matting. Appreciate your help

If it's concrete floor you could skip the plywood in Lukes suggestion. Ply is really important if training on wood joists to spread the weight. Not an issue on solid floor.
I tried playground mats instead of the stable mats. They are thicker so protect the floor and dampen the sound better. They are more bouncy though.
An ikea stainless steel splashback on ply is good to protect against stones/kegs bouncing into the wall in loading area or by squat rack.

If you're deadlifting on just rubber over time it'll smash the concrete.

I would keep buying stable mats myself I would buy them one or two at a time for years and now they are three I think the issue is I constantly take them out and clean them and they become annoying moving them dragging them
It works is a great insulator in the winter time but it took me some time to collect all these mats.

I would go stable mats only where I was lifting and 1m x 1m jigsaw matts for martial arts everywhere else...unless prowler type sleds are involved then facebook marketplace for some astroturf for those areas...in fact FB market place will see you kitted out with rubber mats and jigsaw mats for cheaper than so many other places if you have the patience with it's search function. Many bargains to be had there.

I've used similar to these for non barbell areas over the years and can be great...dumbbell areas seem happy with these also fwiw

I'd personally go for ply with stable mats on top, though I'd have ply for the foot areas rather than matting as I prefer to squat/dead off something solid. I had all mats previously but much prefer my new setup with ply in the centre.

One downside is obviously that you have to know where your racks will be and they're a pain to move, but who moves them anyway.

Having different density mats in different areas would do my head in too, whatever anyone says you can feel the difference (and for only a few quid savings).

Check the level too, and fix that it it's out before putting anything on top. Don't underestimate the sound transfer with deads, I looked at acoustic matting but that's expensive - more ply rather than more mats for me.

What's your floor plan for the gym? What kit are you going with?

Thanks all. Its looking like a squat platform with a bench platform opposite, then a dead platform adjacent (and the opposite wall to the dead platform has doors on so this side would be free).

I've had to rip a kitchen and s**t out first...
Ended up learning to plumb, remove a kitchen and do my own wiring. Had relevant trades bods check my work over and is all sound which is a result!

I've used acoustic underlay, and waiting on 20mm hard interlocking rubber. I'm then going to build dedicated platforms ontop of these using ply/multi material matts etc.

Ply under stable mats sounds good.

We have used stable mats and then rubber platform on top

We use these to create the platforms - https://www.slip-not.co.uk/productdetail/Rubber-Gym-Mats-Interlocki...

They have bumped the price I see but you would be looking 150 quid for a 3x1m deadlift platform.

These tiles are bomb proof and really help to deaden the impact of the weights. On their own however they def don't provide enough protection as my new garage gym floor can attest.

This is similar to what I'm doing the whole floor in, then I'm building platforms on top with ply and the softer type matting similar to what you see in kids parks etc. That's the plan anyway haha. The biggest battle I had was ripping a kitchen out!

Finished. Thanks all for recommendations. Basically thin structural ply for the whole floor, 18mm hard rubber interlocking mats on top. Deadicated strengthshop deadlift frame.

Dropped 200kg from waist height and it can't be heard from upstairs (it's the lower ground/basement level of the house). Win.

ps. If anyone is in the Calderdale area/West Yorkshire and stuck for anywhere to train you are more than welcome (or even just for a session). Not sure what the rules on visitors and s**t is so may need to consider.
