Doesn't it depend quite a bit on the plate? Although any hub lift is impressive to me. Tongue

It definitely does.

I've pulled it off once and never got close since.

The hub on my plates is heavily angled and damn near impossible.

I'll get it soon!

Right I just did another couple of deload sessions last week, yesterday I won Northerns with a not perfect but pretty good performance, I'll do a write up tomorrow with the details.

Right I'm behind a bit as always with logging!

Northern Englands 2021

Was excited to just be competing again

Event 1: Log ladder 130/140/150/160
Was up fairly early, first 2 one motions, stricted the 150 then against my ego push pressed 160. Got 35 seconds but got pipped to first by Ben Williams, not too unhappy with this as my bodyweight as 126kg on the day and I really notice it on the clean with less belly to help!

Events 2: Axle deadlift 300kg for reps
Been dreaming about this event! Kev went out early and hit 9 so I knew 10 was the target. Went out at a good pace and just didn't start hitching like I usually do, felt really strong and when the 7th went up smoothly I knew I had 10. Hitched the 8th and 9th but nothing major. Had 10 seconds so didnt have time to tighten my straps again, hitched the 10th and just locked out, got the down signal and the straps went. Dropped the bar and got no lifted. That left me on 9 for the joint win but I wasn't too bothered about the no rep I was absolutely buzzing to hit 300x10 and on an axle, did 300x7 last year on a deadlift bar so a massive improvement.

Event 3: 150 Farmers for distance drop and turn every 10m
Banker event for me, the leader was at just over 4 lengths so I went out with a fairly quick 3 lengths, took a few breathes and did the 4th length and another few metres so take the win. Nice and easy.

Event 4: sandbag toss 15-25kg over 4m
Was out last and should have done a fast 4, took my time on the 5th and got it over. I instead went for a fast 5 and hit the crossbar with the last one and then did it twice more. Left me in 6th place maybe?

Event 5: keg medley, 3x120kg 5m , 145kg, 175kg over 53 inches
Was 7 points ahead at this point so was all pretty safe but I wanted to put a good time in. Only one man loaded the 5th keg so I went out pretty quick and loaded the first 4 then took a rest and got myself set for the big one. Lapped it and got it up near the bar but it just wasn't secure enough for me to get enough height. I think 2nd or 3rd place on this. Happy with the improvement though as last time I couldnt get the big keg off the floor, I think with a bit of practice on kegs I'd get it loaded I'm just rusty from training sandbags instead!

Overall 1st by 10 points so really happy with that. Big takeaways are that my deadlift is going really well and to keep up the same approach going forward with it and that throwing is now probably my big weakness so that'll be getting trained twice a week now. UKs is next in 6 weeks and I'm ready to win a big title!

22.4.21

Warmed up

Throwing bags
26 8x1 4m Made 2 attempts (PB)
22 5x2 4.6m Failed first couple of sets. Realised I'm getting too tight on the throws so relaxed my arms and made the action a lot more fluid, felt better and got 3 singles with the 2nd reps high just a bit off line. Next session will be better now I've realised what I'm doing wrong

Dumbbell press
92 6x2

Yoke
180
270
330 5x15m (These are feeling really nice now, looking forward to yoke in comp)

Viking press
140x8
150 4x8

Sled drag
Took ages f**king about with the set up, turns out 300kg on concrete doesn't provide much resistance so hooked a big tire over the sled
270kg plates plus tire
7x10m (That was better, pretty hard to get going.)

Sandbag carry
140 3x15m (PB. I Was stuck for time after spending so long on sled drag but that will be faster next time)

Done. Pretty good first event session!

Nice show write up.

What would you say is between you and the absolute top level now events wise? In the past deadlift would have been a candidate (?) but 300 x 10 on an axel is, while unlikely to win a world class show, still up there imo. Can’t imagine Luke S for example doing much more. Oberst might be good for a double Grin

Have you looked into doing the Arnold amateurs?

I'm very excited to say that the answer seems to be very little. My deadlift is still a relative weakness so I'm not expecting to be going around outpulling everyone but I'm certain I'm good for 400kg when I next max out. My throwing is a big weakness so that's getting worked on a lot but it's not the most common event. Overall I feel really good, Luke S is actually my benchmark for deadlifting, if I can beat him on deads I'll be in a very good spot. I really can't wait to do a big comp and see how everything stacks up. I think I'll cause some surprises on stones as well this year.

I can't do the arnold amateur with competing at WSM unfortunately!

Viking press
150x5
160x5

Stones one motion
150x2 55" failed the 3rd as I started to s**t myself, annoying as it would have been a PB!
150xfail Lost my mojo a bit after untackying and retacking
Stones lap and load
150x10 to 52" (was meant to be 2x5 but I felt good, rep PB)

Done.

Great to hear you say that. It certainly looks that way to me and I’d imagine everyone else following your progress. Looking forward to seeing you get a chance to prove it on a big stage!

That’s a pity about the Arnold’s. I think it’s been great for allowing some of the (now) top guys to become one of the “regulars”. I can’t imagine Novikov for e.g being where he is now without it.

Yeah everything is coming together really well. The long term approach seems to be working quite nicely, can't wait for UKs to see how it's all paying off.

Absolutely it's been a great launch pad for so many. I thought I had a Arnold Europe invite sorted in 2019 but no luck with that. I shall just keep improving and see what comes up
